In addition to many exploratory and small studies, we have already mounted, and are mounting, a series of large, multi-center trials that are designed with the same kinds of rigor as any large trial that should lead to public approval and acceptance of a mainstream therapy or preventative agent. We have completed a study of St. John’s Wort for major depression that I’ll discuss. That study was in collaboration with our colleagues in National Institute for Mental Health.

In collaboration with the National Cancer Institute and their community-based cooperative oncology program, we’re studying shark cartilage as adjunctive therapy for inoperable non-small cell lung cancer.

With the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, we are doing a study in 3000 otherwise healthy aging Americans, asking whether the preliminary data for ginkgo biloba is correct, in that it can prevent dementia.

With the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, we have mounted the largest ever study of acupuncture for osteoarthritis pain.
