HCV has many genotypes, and now 9 major groups and 30+ subtypes have been identified, and its number may grow continuously. Simmonds' classification system (1994) has been approved in general, which defines major groupings according to Arabic numericals in order of discovery, and subtypes are disignated by lower-case letters.
