-De Carle Distinguished Lecturers, May. 2012 New Zealand, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 4 public lectures (each of 60-90 minutes)  The book from our lectures: entitled "Diaspora, Disasters, and the Cosmos: Rituals and Images"(P.J. Stewart and A. J. Strathern, Durham, N.C.: Carolina Academic Press).

Pamela J. Stewart and Andrew Strathern, 4 joint lectures

3 May 2012  "Papua New Guinea: Peace and Violence Takes Turns".  This lecture deals with the alternation of violence and peace-making processes in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea since the 1930s, drawing on the argument of our book (Strathern and Stewart, Peace-Making and the Imagination, University of Queensland Press, 2011), and utilizing the linguistic concept of meta-pragmatics to elucidate mechanisms of peace-making.

10 May 2012  "Religion, Identity, and the Flow of Peace and Violence in Pacific Societies".  This lecture argues that religion and ritual practices can be involved both in the production of violence and in peace-making processes.  Case-materials are adduced from Bellona , in the Solomon Islands, where historically there was an emphasis on violence and revenge, and from Mount Hagen,  in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where peace-making through compensations for deaths, prevailed, especially after colonial pacification.

17 May 2012   "Emotive Markers of Conflict, Peace-Making, and Diaspora Shifts of Identity".  This lecture draws on materials from popular songs in Scotland and Ireland on topics of violence and peace-making, historical memories of conflicts and diaspora shifts of identity, and uses linguistic theories of framing, image-production, and the collapsing of time and space to explain how songs of commemoration act as forms of ritual practice to create their messages.

24 May 2012   "Disasters, the Cosmos, and Peace-Making".  This lecture enters into the new theoretical arena of Disaster Anthropology, arguing that there is a need to study the long-term as well as the short-term effects of natural disasters, and to understand people's own efforts to make peace with the environment and between themselves over time. The meta-pragmatics of local perceptions of the cosmos are involved in this process, just as they are in coping with violence and conflict-resolution.
