Semester At Sea

Accompanied by my entire family, I taught 3 courses on the Fall 1999 Voyage of Semester at Sea while it was still at the University of Pittsburgh. While on the voyage, I created what is now known as a blog, complete with 500 photos and commentary as we went. I guess I was one of the first people to create a blog! It was interesting that several students' and staff members' families emailed me to request that their kids/staff members be included in the blog.

The blog site is available at http://www.pitt.edu/~atsea

It is a distant but extremely vivid and fond memory. Building the site during the trip helped me process the adventure. I headed for an Internet cafe at each of the 10 ports over the 14 weeks armed with floppy disks and WS_FTP. Three computers, a digital camcorder, and a CD burner helped make the site possible. Upon arrival to each port, we needed to wait 2 hours for customs to clear our ship. I sat on the bed in our cabin during that time and transferred selected video frames to the floppy disks along with accompanying HTML and narrative.
