Prehispanic Chiefdoms in the Valle de la Plata, Volume 5: Regional Settlement Patterns

Cacicazgos prehispánicos del Valle de la Plata, tomo 5: Patrones de asentamiento regionales

by / por Robert D. Drennan

Comprehensive presentation of the results of regional archeological settlement study in the Valle de la Plata of southwestern Colombia. The emergence of small prehispanic chiefly polities is delineated. Each had a few thousand inhabitants spread through some 100 square kilometers and was focused on a complex of burial monuments which served as a ceremonial center. These centralized polities developed in the more productive parts of the Valle de la Plata, but control over agricultural resources does not seem to have been an important part of their developmental dynamic.
