For Second Test

The test will consist of definitions and short essay responses. You will be responsible for all the vocabulary terms so far, so know them thoroughly.

Below are short essay questions that you should be prepared to answer.

Discuss the two plot "phases" of Child of the Dead. How does the first "phase" focusing on Running Deer and smallpox relate thematically to the second "phase" focusing on Gray Mouse and her heritage?

Discuss the contempoary qualities of Child of the Dead. Even though the book is set in a place and time far removed from us, what elements of the book are still relevant to contemporary life?

Identify and discuss one major theme in The Body of Christopher Creed.

Discuss the ending of The Body of Christopher Creed. Do you believe the ending is satisfying and believable or not? Please explain with specifics.

Using "A Wilderness Station" for illustration, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the epistolary style.

Discuss the point of view in "Various Temptations" or "An Official Position." To what degree is the author successful--or not successful--in prompting the reader to feel sympathy for a character who commits horrible crimes?

Discuss the issue of verisimilitude in "The Man in the Black Suit." Do you believe the story should be read as a "dream" story or more literally? Explain with specifics from the text.

Pick one character from the unit we have just finished and explain in some detail that character's Weltanschauung.
