Remembering Sen. Orrin Hatch

Hatch in a suit

Sen. Orrin Hatch was born in Homestead, Pennsylvania, on March 22, 1934. After graduating from Brigham Young University, he earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Law in 1962. He would go on to a storied legislative career that ended in 2019, with the title of longest-serving Republican U.S. senator in history. He died April 23, 2022.

“The University of Pittsburgh and the city of Pittsburgh has lost one of our own,” said Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “Senator Orrin Hatch was a civic giant, political force and friendly neighborhood leader — all wrapped in one. His rise, in many ways, is the Pittsburgh story come to life. He cherished relationships, seized opportunities, delivered against the odds, and understood the importance of working hard and working together. Along the way, he also made history — helping to shape the nation we know today in innumerable ways.”
