Postdoc Denis Newman-Griffis wins dissertation award

The Cathedral of Learning framed by trees in the fall

Denis Newman-Griffis, a postdoctoral scholar in the School of Medicine's Department of Biomedical Informatics, has received the American Medical Informatics Association's (AMIA) 2021 Doctoral Dissertation Award for his dissertation “Capturing Domain Semantics with Representation Learning: Applications to Health and Function.”

The AMIA is the largest professional society for medical informatics in the U.S. and is one of the primary societies globally for supporting and disseminating work in medical data science.

In his work, Newman-Griffis aims to learn how computers can be used to study language and information, specifically what it looks like to build practical natural language processing methods for health and disability information.
