Ms. Kaihua Xiu joins our Hand Lab as a graduate student researcher. Kaihua is a recipient of State Scholarship Fund from China Scholarship Council. The support will allow her to complete her doctoral dissertation in our Hand Lab. She is eager to investigate the biomechanical properties of the carpal tunnel, as well as some biological aspects of the soft tissue related to the tunnel. We extend our warm welcome to Kaihua, and wish her best in our Hand Lab, in Pittsburgh, and in the United States.

[2007-10-01] Mr. Murry Berger visits Hand Lab

Our Hand Lab hosted a visit by Mr. Murry Berger, a distinguished businessman, scholar and ambassador in food industry. Mr. Berger was the director of the National Council for US-China Trade, and Chairman of its Food Import Committee. Mr. Berger was invited to China to be the first representative of the food industry at the Canton Fair and has subsequently made 27 trips to China. He served on the boards of 5 corporations and is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He published more than 100 articles and lectures frequently in the US and abroad. We are pleased that Mr. Berger recognizes the importance of our research on carpal tunnel syndrome, and that he keenly supports our efforts towards healthy hands for the food processing workers and the general public.

 

 

[2007-09-15] Miss Rachel Siciliano joins Hand Lab

Our Hand Lab welcomes Miss Rachel Siciliano to join our research team. Rachel is in her junior year of the Bioengineering program at the University of Pittsburgh. Rachel is excited about the research opportunities present at the Hand Research Laboratory and plans to pursue graduate studies in Bioengineering with a focus on orthopedic biomechanics.

[2007-07-30] Grants from Pittsburgh Foundation

Our Hand Lab receives two grants from The Pittsburgh Foundation. One project is led by Dr. Robert Goitz to study the morphology and kinematics of finger joints. The other project is led by Dr. Robert Kaufmann to study thumb motion of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb with arthritis. Congratulations to Dr. Goitz and Dr. Kaufmann!

 

 

[2007-07-15] Scholarship Award from NFI

Dr. Zong-Ming Li receives a Fisheries Scholarship Award from the National Fisheries Institute. The award supports our research on carpal tunnel syndrome, a prevalent hand disorder among fish processing workers.

 

 

[2007-07-15] JOSR Editorial Board

Dr. Zong-Ming Li is named as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research (JOSR). Dr. Li also serves on the Editorial Boards of (Chinese) Journal of Medical Biomechanics, Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, and (Chinese) Journal of Biomedical Engineering.

 

 

[2007-07-15] NIH grant

Our Hand Lab receives a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support our study of the carpal tunnel. This grant is awarded for 3 years via NIH/NIAMS R03 mechanisms. Dr. Zong-Ming Li is the principal investigator of the project.

 

 

[2007-06-15] Mr. Chris DeSanctis joins Hand Lab

Our Hand Lab welcomes Mr. Chris DeSanctis to join us for a summer research internship. Chris is a sophomore undergraduate in bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. As for the summer research, Chris is eager about working on the project of studying the carpal tunnel using ultrasound. Looking into the future, Chris is excited about a career as an orthopaedic surgeon.

 

 

[2007-06-15] Mr. Chakan to Medical School

Mr. Matthew Chakan is admitted to Boston University School of Medicine after working for two years in our Hand Lab as an undergraduate student researcher while completing his BS in Bioengineering. Since his arrival to the Hand Lab, Matt has been a great asset, helping perform several experimental studies and set up the laboratory facilities. We will miss his excellent work in the lab, and wish Matt the best in his pursuit of a medical career.

 

 

[2007-06-15] Lecture at Mayo Clinic

Dr. Zong-Ming Li was an invited speaker for the Biomedical Engineering seminar at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine on May 18, 2007. Dr. Li gave a lecture titled "Hand bioengineering and clinical applications." During his stay at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Li visited the reputed Biomechanics Lab and Motion Analysis Laboratory directed by Professor Kai-Nan An and Professor Kenton Kaufman, and had an opportunity to interact with the outstanding orthopaedic researchers.

 

 

 

[2007-05-15] Miss Shan Jin to Duke

Our youngest alumnus, Miss Shan Jin, has been admitted to Duke University after finishing her high school. Miss Jin is also the winner of the Timken Company College Scholarship ($30,000/year for four years). Miss Jin worked as a volunteer in our Hand Lab in the summer of 2005. We are proud of her achievement and wish her best for a bright future.

[2007-04-05] Professor Latash visits Hand Lab

Our Hand Lab welcomed a visit by Dr. Mark Latash, a Distinguished Professor of Kinesiology at Penn State University. During his visit, Dr. Latash advised us to apply his theory of motor synergy to the study of hand function impairment caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. It was a fortune for Dr. Zong-Ming Li to have Dr. Latash as one of the mentors during his graduate studies at Penn State. We appreciate the continued support and counsel from Dr, Latash.

[2007-03-15] Jeremy Bock joins Hand Lab

Jeremy Bock is a double major student specializing in biomedical and mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He came to the Hand Lab in his second year as an undergraduate student researcher. Jeremy is interested in hand orthopedics and aspires to be an orthopedic surgeon. He is very enthusiastic and is excited to start his own project and cadaveric experimentation. Welcome Jeremy!

 

 

[2007-03-15] Nicholas Werner joins Hand Lab

Nicholas Werner, a bioengineering undergraduate student from the University of Pittsburgh, joined our Hand Lab for as an undergraduate student researcher. Nick is looking forward to doing research towards the kinematics of mouse scrolling. He also hopes to further his knowledge of biomechanical principles as they relate to the hand.

Dr. Zong-Ming Li is elected as the Secretary of the World Association for the Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE). Dr. Li serves the office for 4 years starting from January 1 2007.

 

 

[2007-02-01] Ms. Salcinski in Hand Lab

Amanda Salcinski, a PhD candidate in Exercise Physiology in the Department of Health and Physical Activity, joined our Hand Lab to collect experimental data for her dissertation. Amanda is studying the association of Vitamin D on neuromuscular function in patients with Crohn's disease under the guidance of Dr. Jean McCrory.

 

 

[2007-02-01] ORS Appointment

Dr. Zong-Ming Li is appointed as the Co-Chair (with Jo Hannafin, MD, PhD) of the Upper Extremity Topic Committee of the Orthopaedic Research Society. Dr. Li serves for a 2-year term (2007-2009).

 

 

[2007-01-19] Article citation reaches 100

ISI Web of Knowledge indicates that one of our papers has reached 100 citations after its publication for 8 years and 9 months. In general, a paper that has been cited more than 100 times within 5-10 years after publication has made a significant impact. The study approached the "motor redundancy problem" using human fingers as a model (Li ZM, Latash ML, Zatsiorsky VM. Force sharing among fingers as a model of the redundancy problem. [2007-01-15] Medical students join Hand Lab

Mr. Kraig Graham and Mr. Philip McClure, medical students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, joined our Hand Lab for a scholarly project on the relationship between the morphology and osteoarthritis of the distal interphalangeal joints of the fingers. Kraig and Philip are under the guidance of our attending hand surgeons, Dr. Robert Goitz and Dr. Robert Kaufmann.

[2007-01-15] Lecture at Chongqing University

Dr. Zong-Ming Li gave an invited guest lecture at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Chongqing University on December 25, 2006. The lecture was part of the seminar series sponsored by the "111 Mission of Innovative Base for Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering."

 

 

[2007-01-15] Keynote Lecture

Dr. Zong-Ming Li was one of the invited keynote speakers for the 8th China National Biomechanics Conference, December 19-24, 2006, Hong Kong. The conference was organized by Professor Yubo Fan and Professor Ming Zhang. The title of Dr. Li's lecture was "Hand Biomechanics and Clinical Applications."
