[2006-12-06] Professor Pearl visits Hand Lab Our Hand Lab welcomed a visit by Michael L. Pearl, MD, from University of Southern California. Professor Peal was keenly interested in our research on the hand, which is closely related to his expertise on shoulder/elbow. We thank Professor Pearl for his enthusiastic discussion with us on our research projects.
[2006-11-29] Professor O'Keefe visits Hand Lab Our lab welcomed a visit by Regis O'Keefe, MD, PhD, Professor of Orthopaedics from the University of Rochester. It was a privilege to have Professor O'Keefe bring his research and educational inspiration to our lab. We appreciate his kind compliments on our research endeavor.
[2006-10-23] Professor Mak visited Hand Lab Our Hand Lab welcomed a visit by Arthur F.T. Mak, Chair Professor and Associate Vice President at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Mak has been an enthusiastic supporter of our research. During his visit, Professor Mak encouraged us to enhance our existing research collaboration and to develop a student exchange program.

[2006-10-01] Presentation at ASB Our Hand Lab presented three papers at the recent American Society of Biomechanics Conference at Blacksburg, Virginia, September 6-9, 2006.
[2006-07-13] Dr. Borovetz visits Hand Lab Our Hand Lab welcomed a visit by Harvey Borovetz, PhD, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Borovetz, appreciated our bioengineering approaches to the study of carpal tunnel syndrome, and our utilization of the Hand Lab as a research training base for bioengineering students. We are proud of our affiliation with Bioengineering and look forward to having more bioengineering students work in the Hand Lab.
[2006-07-10] Vice Dean Dr. Kanter visits Hand Lab Our Hand Lab hosted a visit by Steven L. Kanter, MD, Vice Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Kanter enjoyed learning our research activities and watching some live demonstrations. Dr. Kanter is enthusiastic about our hand research and is eager to facilitate research collaborations between our Hand Lab and other laboratories.

[2006-06-23] Brazilian surgeon visiting Hand Lab Dr. Luiz Angelo Vieira, a hand surgeon from Brazil, visited our Hand Lab. During his one-week stay in Pittsburgh, Dr. Vieira had a chance to participate in several of our ongoing research projects. He assisted us in preparing the cadaveric specimens for the Thumb Kinematics, Index Finger Kinematics, and Transverse Carpal Ligament Stretching experiments. Dr. Vieira is very interested in joining our lab as a fellow in the near future. Our team greatly enjoyed Dr. Vieira’s visit to the lab, and we look forward to working with him in the future.

Dr.
Zong-Ming Li publishes a Point-of-View article on the "degrees of
freedom problem" in the recent issue of the "Motor Control" journal. As a
point of view, Dr. Li proposes a new concept of "functional degrees of
freedom" based on classical mechanics and contemporary findings in
neuromuscular control. (
Matthew
Chakan, an undergraduate student researcher at the Hand Lab, received a
research award from the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories Alumni Council.
This award will support Matt's study on finger proprioception under the
mentorship of Dr. Zong-Ming Li. Congratulations to Matt.
Dr.
Sebastian Gehrmann, a German Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Resident,
joined our Hand Lab for a Hand Research Fellowship for one year. Dr.
Gehrmann received his MD from University of Hamburg, Germany, and has been
interested in hand surgery. In the past, Dr. Gehrmann created a
computer-based anatomical hand atlas. He is enthusiastic about
conducting anatomical and biomechanical studies of the hand in our
laboratory. We extend our heartiest welcome to Dr. Gehrmann to join us as an
international fellow!
Dr.
Zong-Ming Li was invited to serve on the International Scientific
Committee for the 2007 Triennial International Hand & Wrist Biomechanics
Symposium organized by Professor Fong-Chin Su. The International Scientific
Committee is composed of the following nine members: Kai-Nan An (USA), Moroe
Beppu (Japan), Marc Garcia-Elias (Spain), Zong-Ming Li (USA), David L.
Nelson (USA), Barry P. Pereira (Singapore), Frederic Schuind (Belgium),
Steven F. Viegas (USA), and Frederick W. Werner (USA).
Corey
Pacek, MD, an Orthopaedic Resident, joined our Hand Lab for a research
rotation for one year. Corey came to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
after receiving his MD from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Corey
received his BS from Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania. He is a
West Pennsylvanian native, married, and has a one year old son. In the
one-year research experience with our Hand Lab, Corey is enthusiastic about
performing an anatomical study of the carpal tunnel. Looking beyond, Corey
is interested in pursuing a fellowship in hand surgery following his
residency. Welcome on board, Corey!
Luke
Xie, a mechanical and biomedical engineering student from Carnegie
Mellon University, joined the Hand Lab as a undergraduate student
researcher. He is enthusiastic to work on carpal tunnel modeling using
computer aided designing. He is also eager to have hand-on experiences of
cadaveric experiments. Welcome, Luke!
