This web page is being written as a requirement for my ENGR0011 class but the content in the page is mine and what is posted is my choice and is not the position of the university and does not reflect on the university policies.

Hello! My name is Yannis Rigas and I am a freshman BioE at the University of Pittsburgh

Sitting. Sitting and staring at the white door that encapsulated the bathroom from the rest of the house. As the door knob turned and a member of my family exited the bathroom, I just sat there. My four-year-old brain overwhelmed with the question how? How does this contraption called door work? I would sit looking at that door a countless number of times for uncountable amounts of time trapped by my own curiosity, and filled with wonder. Needless to say, throughout my eighteen years this curiosity has always been inside of me, and with the proper environment, my curiosity will be able to prosper into action. During my college application process I wanted to find an institution that not only harbored my curiosity, but allowed me to act upon that curiosity. The University of Pittsburghs Swanson School of Engineering is one of those places. Through the Universitys many emails, I was able to get a better understanding of the opportunities to foster my curiosity. These opportunities included a plethora of volunteer opportunities, a vast amount of student led clubs, a large research endowment that correlates to co-op opportunities, and the fact that the University is in the direct vicinity of UPMC.

I grew up in a small town in the suburbs of Chicago my whole life. I went to a small suburban high school called Fenton Community High School. To be completely honest, the University of Pittsburghs presence at my high school is almost non-existent. In fact, my counselors could not even recall the last student who attended the University of Pittsburgh from my high school. Although this might deter some of my previous classmates, this actually caused Pitt to become more intriguing to me. Pitt gave me to sense of a new challenge ahead of me, a challenge that would be too daunting for some of my peers. To further this point, after all my decisions came out, I accepted the challenge in front of me and decided to attend Pitt. And, as I mentioned previously, my curiosity only encouraged me to accept the challenge ahead of me. In fact, my curiosity is what drove me to choose Pitt over the closer to home alternatives.
