Shirley decided to major in bioengineering ever since her first experience with biology in her freshman year in high school. However, she felt that simply majoring in biology would not satisfy her skills math, science, and logic. Bioengineering fit both Shirley's interest in biology and skills in problem solving. There was also a personal motive behind her choice in majoring bioengineering. Shirley's grandfather, a great infulence in her life, died of lung cancer when she was nine. Ever since, she has used her grandfather's death as a driving force behind her resolution to contribute to the cure of cancer. With the growing possiblities of the biomedical engineering field and the new innovative technology in diagnosing and treating diseases, it made sense for Shirley to join the expanding industry.
Shirley chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh because of its close connections with the medical field. Pittsburgh is known for its great health care system. Considering the fact that being a bioengineer would mean becoming a part of the medical world, coming to the University of Pittsburgh made the most sense. Also, the bioengineering program at Pitt is ranked among the top programs in the country.
In her free time, Shirley likes to play piano and clarinet. Music is her greatest hobby. She was in her high school band for all four years and was in the University Orchestra last semester. Shirley is also involved in the university chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

Elevation Analysis of Oakland "Walk Challenge" Map
Preliminary Description:
To service one of its mission, OTMA has created a walking map of Oakland as part of the "2008 Ready, Set, Walk" campaign. Our team has been asked to enhance this map by adding for each route information about elevation, number of steps encountered, and caloric expenditures. With this information, we will update their map, and provide them with an online digital version.
This website discusses various aspects of topographic surveying, from techniques to the origin of surveying. It's a good website to get a general understanding of surveying.
This website calculates the amount of calories burned doing various daily activities based on the weight of the person and the duration of the activity.
