The Writers' Café is an on-campus writing and meeting space housed in the Writing Center.
The Café meets during Fall and Spring Terms.

Writing can be a solitary art. Take time on alternate Friday afternoons to find an informal community of Pitt writers at the Writers' Café. Make contacts with other writers, try your hand at different genres, let guided freewriting exercises jumpstart your process, and share feedback on works-in-progress with peers from all over campus. At the Writers' Café, you'll get leads on publishing opportunities and contests and enjoy a supportive environment for trying out your work on new readers and listeners. As a participant in the program, you'll have the opportunity to shape this new program according to your needs and interests.

Each session is facilitated by at least two practicing creative writers from the Pitt faculty and is structured loosely so that you can, if you choose, spend time writing, sharing work, and engaging in small-group discussion of works-in-progress. Coffee, soft drinks, and snacks are available free of charge. Start your weekend the "write" way by being part of the Writer's Cafe.

Who can come to the Café?

Students who are writing majors or who are just deeply interested in writing are invited to come share their creative work and interests with other Pittsburgh area writers. You can bring poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and uncategorizable hybrids.

The Writing Center has a number of creative writing faculty on staff as tutors, and you are ALWAYS WELCOME to get one-on-one feedback on poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction at the Center. To schedule an appointment with a creative writing tutor, call the Writing Center at (412) 624-6556.

How do Writers' Café sessions work?

Sessions offer you a chance to participate in either a workshop or a freewrite exercise led by a writer from the Pitt faculty.

All of the meetings are held in the Writing Center, M2 Thaw Hall. (For a map to the Writing Center, go to our main page.) If you plan on workshopping, please bring 5 copies of a work in progress (no more than 5 pages of prose or poetry at a time, please). Otherwise, bring an open and relaxed self along for guided exercises.

When you attend, be sure to check out the folder we've been keeping with news on contests and opportunities for writers (For instance, did you know that Hallmark cards offers great internships for creative writers?). We have also posted some opportunities on our learning and contests pages.

If you have questions, contact Ellen Smith and Keely Bowers, Writers' Café Coordinators at (412) 624-6556.
