MINUTES – SEPTEMBER 28, 2000

The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m.

MINUTES/ANNOUNCEMENTS

No changes were requested to the minutes of the May 25, 2000 meeting.

  • The Provost will formally charge Council at the November 2 meeting.
  • A panel of successful humanists will be assembled to relay their funding experiences.
  • Robert Lowman from North Carolina will be invited to direct a workshop on interdisciplinary research.
  • Faculty in the Social Sciences will be invited to make a trip to Washington, D.C. to learn about funding opportunities.
  • Council will be asked to revisit some policy issues.
  • A Research Festival is being scheduled for next fall.  Klinzing will invite the planning committee to provide details to Council.

REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH - MICHAEL CROUCH

There have been some staff changes in the Office of Research.  An additional grants officer position was created, and Kathy Carr has been hired to fill the position.  Pam Weid is the new grants and contracts assistant, and Eric Larson graduated to a full grants officer.  One vacancy is left to fill.

The Research and Conduct Compliance Office under the guidance of Randy Juhl is working to regularize Conflict of Interest disclosure.

All major agencies are receiving substantial increases.  Funding opportunities are promising.

There is a new PHS mandate about instruction in responsible research.  A certificate of completion, attached to the proposal, may be mandatory by February 1, 2001.

The FY 2001 Faculty and Staff Research Administration Viewbook is available online.

NEW BUSINESS

Salter asked about possible changes in animal use policy.  Klinzing will invite Joseph Newsome to address the URC on this topic.

Susan Sereika (representing the School of Nursing) inquired if the copyright policy is being considered for update.  Klinzing informed Council that a small committee has been assembled to examine the copyright policy.
