The meeting was called to order at 2:04 p.m.
 

MINUTES

No changes were requested to the minutes of the May 3, 2001 meeting.

SUBCOMMITTEES

Systems Failure
Frieze summarized the findings of the subcommittee. Their full report will be sent to members of Council.

Security
Draus presented the subcommittee report to Klinzing. The group will be meeting over the summer with the Unix subcommittee of the Senate Computer Usage Committee to further discuss security issues.
Jordan voiced concern about e-mail spam. Galletta suggested that simple guidelines be circulated regarding the potential danger associated with .vbs and .exe files.

Bandwidth
The subcommittee feels that there is a need to prioritize a certain quality of service down to the individual user or perhaps a segment of users. Hoelzeman will send a final report to Klinzing.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Council members should contact Klinzing via e-mail with agenda items for discussion, exploration, and resolution to present to the Provost for next year.
  • Six proposals have been funded as part of the High Performance Network Applications Initiative. Awardees include Gunduz Caginalp (FAS/Mathematics), Shi-Kuo Chang (FAS/Computer Science), Luis Chaparro (Electrical Engineering) et al., Rose Constantino (Nursing/Health and Community Systems), Michael Gorin (Ophthalmology) et al., Jeremy Levy (FAS/Physics and Astronomy) et al.

REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF COMPUTING SERVICES & SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT -- JINX WALTON

CISCO may be interested in matching the High Performance Network Applications grants. Walton will look for linkages.

On July 12, 2001, the transition will be made to ten-digit dialing. In order to obtain a line outside the University system, callers will now dial just "9" instead of "91."

The increase in bandwidth for residence hall connections is being financed from the student fee.

As of June 18, 2001, Verizon will be the new phone service for the modem pool. The access number will remain the same.
