HIGH PERFORMANCE NETWORK APPLICATIONS INITIATIVE

Previous winners of the High Performance Network Applications Initiative spoke to Council regarding their respective projects.

Large-scale Networked Computation, Anaylsis and Visualization -- Gunduz Caginalp
Caginalp and Y. B. Altundas summarized their work in computation of dendrites in 3D and comparison with microgravity experiments. They plan to submit the findings of the project to major journals.

The Growing Book -- Shi-Kuo Chang
Chang hopes to facilitate distance learning with what he termed a multi-level instructional book. For further information, visit http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~jung/GrowingBook. He will be seeking external funding to continue the project.

A Distributed Teaching and Research Cooperation System in Engineering and Mathematics -- Luis Chaparro, Juan Manfredi, Ching-Chung Li
This project takes audio and video into the classroom. Chaparro and his collaborators hope to improve image processing. Test files can be found at http://www.pitt.edu/~lfch/I2_test.html.

Delivery of Digital Media in Teaching and Research -- Rose Constantino
Constantino's course in forensic nursing will give students access to digitized images from various locations. She plans to follow-up on her current work with a proposal to the NIMH.

"Next-Door" Videoconferencing for Collaborative University Research -- Jeremy Levy, John Yates
Levy gave a brief synopsis of this project. He and
John Yates may demonstrate the capabilities of this project at a future CAC meeting.

Internet2 Resident Teaching Grant -- Michael B. Gorin, Joseph Warnicki
Gorin and Warnicki were not in attendance.

MINUTES/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Vice Provost Andrew Blair represented Klinzing who could not be in attendance.

No changes were requested to the minutes of the January 17, 2002 meeting.

SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS

Communications -- Cohn
Frieze reported that the survey instrument was still under construction.

Faculty Training --
Karimi reported that this subcommittee (a joint group with members of the Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence) has not met yet.

Security -- Draus
Draus had no new information to report.

High Performance Network Applications Initiative -- Hoelzeman
Jones reported that she had created a Website (http://www.pitt.edu/~vpres/CAC/HPNAI/HPNAI.htm) for the Initiative and asked Council for suggestions regarding any additional information that they would like to see on the Website.

REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF COMPUTING SERVICES & SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT -- JINX WALTON

Walton was not in attendance at the meeting. No formal report was offered.
