Council Charge

The Provost delivered the Council’s charge. He asked Council members to

• continue to support the academic computing seminar series, which highlights trends in academic computing
• work with CSSD to explore trends in academic computing services in areas such as computing and technological infrastructure
• work with CSSD and University faculty members on computing issues that affect faculty, staff, and students

Report from Computing Services and Systems Development

Jinx Walton, Director of Computing Services and Systems Development, updated the Council on the University’s technology-based initiatives. CSSD endeavors to

• maintain a robust technology infrastructure
• deliver anytime, anywhere network access
• protect university data
• support university services

Ms. Walton provided overall usage statistics for and background information on the University’s e-mail system and Enterprise Exchange, virus and spam filters, and the emergency notification service. She also discussed projects involving wireless networks, bandwidth upgrades, network security, and enhanced connectivity.

Miscellaneous

Members of the Council discussed several other issues:

• The simulation and modeling group will soon form an interdisciplinary center.
• Computing groups and departments continue to work on Pittgrid.
• The NSF recently launched a program entitled Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation.
