The sequence from Young Hearts (Mladé srdcia, dir. Václav Kubásek, 1952; available without subtitles in Hillman Library) stages the the arrival of "volunteers" (mostly college students who were routinely ordered to take part) at their place of work in a manner that meets the expectations of Socialist Realism – common human traits like spontaneity and individual variation are overridden by an image that conveys collective unity and submission to command. The soundtrack shifts it from a potential visual perception of drab boredom to joyful participation.
