| As Ondrej Muranica (Paľo Bielik, the film's co-director) and shepherd Michal (Július Pántik) leave for the United States shortly before World War I, the shots contrast images of farmers' starched Sunday's best, inspired by Karol Plicka's folkloric filmmaking, with soundstage scenes of New York skyscrapers and Pittsburgh's industrial sites, both of which Plicka, an adviser on Beware... !, visited and filmed in 1937. At the opposite end of Ondrej's wife Eva's (Jiřina Štěpničková) and son Ondrej's (Jaromír Garvolt) overbleached and high-key lit folk costumes stand the blacks and darkened grays of the steel mills and then mines of Pittsburgh. The casual appearance of yet another Slovak in the American mine, engineer Gregor (Mikuláš Huba), reminds the viewers that the plot based on emigration and return need not be seen as an unlikely occurrence in their own neighborhood. |
