Lost city of Huayuri

español

Ciudad Perdida de Huayuri is a 20-ha Late Intermediate Period habitation site located in the South Coast of Peru.(click Chronological table for archaeological cultures, South Coast of Peru , click here to get a free copy of Acrobat Reader).

It is located in a ravine that runs perpendicular to the valley floor of the Santa Cruz river (in this photograph, behind), the northern most river of the seven that comprises the Rio Grande de Nasca drainage.

Goals

The goal of the project is to define the domestic organization at Huayuri, a highly agglutinated Late Intermediate Period site.

Comparatevely speaking there are few archaeological projects that have addressed this question in the Rio Grande de Nasca drainage. Some researchers have addressed similar questions to previous archaeological cultures (0 al 650 D.C.), such as K. Vaughn. Click here to access his web page .

Surface architecture reveals a general pattern at the site where groups of structures are attached to medium-size patios. Circulation paths divides the site in zones. The main research goal during our last season was to determine the basic size of domestic units, a question that was addressed by horizontally excavating more than 15 rooms and one large patio.

Our last excavation uncovered several occupational phases at the site (2 mtrs depth)containing activity areas such as kitchens, sleeping and working areas, and recovered large quantities of spindle whorls, ceramic needles, brushes, cooking pots, llama coprolites and bones, fragments of plain textiles, and several domestic middens with large quantities of botanical and other organic remains.

This Field season

During our last field season we selected one domestic compound and one attached patio for excavation. We uncovered 10 of the 20 structures attached to the large patio.

This year we plan to continue with the excavation of the compound by horizontally exposing a late adition to the compund -- an inner patio-- and three large structures. Top

Information recovered during excavation process at the site is documented using traditional methods complemented with contact topography and digital photography. All surfaces uncovered are mapped using a total station and details of features added using the information recovered from 3D-referenced digital photographs. Below, you can se two storage jars from an old occupational phase at the site with stone lids and textile. Stone wall in the photograph is from a recent occupation.

All excavation sectors at the site are directed by experienced archaeologist or archaeology students who are responsible for one or two students. In the lab, students and participants learn and actively participate in the basic procedures related to artifact cleaning, documenting, classification and basic preservation.. Top
