Dr. Herb Kitson, professor of English and French at the
University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, was awarded a poetry
commendation from the Chester H. Jones Foundation’s 1999 National
Poetry Competition. Each
year the Foundation awards forty-eight commendations nationwide.
The panel of experts making the selections included David Citino,
professor of English and Creative Writing at Ohio State University; Walt
McDonald, Paul Whitfield Horn Professor and Director of Creative Writing
at Texas Tech University; and Diane Wakoski, Writer in Residence and
University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University.
Kitson was also a semifinalist in the Atlanta
Review 1999 International Poetry Competition.
According to Dan Veach, editor of the Atlanta
Review, the semifinalists comprise the top 10% of poets
internationally.
During his tenure at UPT, Kitson has published over one hundred
poems in such literary magazines as The New York Quarterly, Poetry East, Yankee, Negative Capability,
Witness, Poet, The Humanist, Pearl, and
Heart.
Kitson has also published two full-length books – Soliloquies
of the Poor and Letters to Annie – and two chapbooks – Slow
Watch for Children/Fast Watch for Adults and On the Way to Where:
Satori Poems.
