- St. Petersburg Paradox
Good brief presentation. For the philosophically curious, excellent discussion of why the paradox is still paradoxical and what to do about it. Menger pointed out that an upper bound to utility is necessary.
- Bernoulli and the St. Petersburg Paradox
A less philosophical and more economically oriented treatment.
- von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility
Gives a thorough treatment of von Neumann-Morgenstern approach, which is central to The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. Following the mathematical detail is a bit too much for an introductory course, but you should look at it to realize that the assumptions being made really are quite mathematical, and quite reasonable. There is a very nice discussion of the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives with the example of the lotteries involving a trip to London, to Paris or (in the expanded lottery) a travel movie.
- Brief Example of Allais Paradox but a rather neat one (and one presented in class).
- The Allais Paradox - Extended discussion
Includes Allais' original example.
