Supervised Field Placements (“Internships”)
Students may elect to participate in a supervised field placement (or “internship”) for academic credit. Those who are looking toward graduate school or employment in the local area after graduation will find internships particularly valuable, especially if they have not previously participated in a hands-on work-related or volunteer experience related to psychology.
Directed Individual Reading ("Independent Study")
Independent study usually involves outside reading, reflection, and ongoing discussion with a faculty supervisor in a self-chosen area of interest to the student. It often culminates in a written paper or other mutually agreed-upon project. Students must approach a suitable faculty member to make arrangements for independent study, which may be taken for 1 or more credits, depending on the amount of work involved and the student's and faculty supervisor's preferences. Independent studies may be completed during a single term or extend beyond a term. They can be taken during the Fall, Spring, or Summer term, depending on student and faculty availability.
