| The Biology Program at The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is designed to provide a quality education that will prepare men and women for careers in today’s fast-paced scientific world. Our ultimate goal is to equip our students with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that will promote their success in graduate school, professional schools, and careers in science and technology. | ![]() |

Students can choose one of two areas of concentration within the Biological Science Major. Those intending to pursue careers in health professions, including in the medical, dental and veterinary branches, will be best prepared by choosing the Health Careers Track. Students who are interested in careers in environmental sciences can choose to follow the Environmental Track. Both tracks also provide a strong foundation that will ensure the success of our students in graduate school. Each track leads to the attainment of a Bachelor of Science degree upon fulfillment of all requirements. |
Curricula
| Core courses for the Health Career Track include two semesters each of general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and calculus, and a semester course in genetics. Including the genetics course, students are required to take 19 credit hours of Health Careers Track lecture/lab courses. Within these courses, students will take a biochemistry course (either a one-semester introductory class, or a more in-depth two-semester biochemistry sequence), and their choice of upper level molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, embryology or anatomy and physiology courses. | ![]() |

Core courses for the Environmental Science Track include two semesters each of general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and calculus, a semester course in ecology, and a semester course in analytical chemistry. The core also includes a three-semester sequence of Environmental Science courses, focusing on topics such as soil science and water quality. In addition, students in this track are required to participate in an internship opportunity, and complete a minimum of one elective course in the Biological Sciences area. |
| Regardless of concentration, all Biological Science majors are required to carry out an individual Capstone Senior Research Project. Topics of research are not isolated to the field of Biology; students can opt to perform research in the fields of Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biophysics, as the core courses of the major are designed to provide competencies in all of these areas. | ![]() |
