Action for Animals Humane Society

Purpose: Action For Animals Humane Society, founded in 1983, is a non-profit, non-governmental humane organization. Our primary function is to care for the strayed, abused and abandoned animals of Westmoreland County. AFAHS provides temporary shelter, interim medical care, feeding, training and eventually, placement in permanent homes, to over 1,000 animals per year. There is approximately 150 animals in our protection each day. Since Action For Animals is a "no kill" shelter, we do not receive any government funding. We rely completely on the generosity of caring individuals, through donations and fundraisers, to run the shelter.

Volunteer Opportunities: We have many opportunities for you to make a difference in the animal welfare world. There's so much you can do at the shelter. You can walk the dogs, cuddle or play with our animals. And there's always work to do at the shelter, you can give our hardworking shelter staff a hand with the many chores that need done daily. Don't forget about our fundraisers and rabies clinics, we can always use your help.

We will set up a buddy program for those interested. We offer volunteer orientations for new volunteers: every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 1:00 pm but only with pre-registrations. You can register by emailing Bernadette: braszo@comcast.net or by calling the shelter.

Purpose: A domestic abuse program in the Alle-Kiski Valley providing services to victims including counseling, shelter, and legal advocacy.

 

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers work on the 24 Hour Hotline - Answering the hotline and providing immediate help to victims of domestic violence is a primary source of satisfaction to many people.

Many volunteers find it most rewarding to work as a Childcare Worker. These special people demonstrate non-violent communication techniques while working with children and are able to spend quality time with them while acting as a positive role model.

You could be a Volunteer Legal Advocate - By providing support and accompaniment through the legal system, volunteers help victims achieve safety and justice.

American Cancer Society

Purpose: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community- based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

American Red Cross, Westmoreland County Chapter

Purpose: The American Red Cross a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Volunteer Opportunities: Our volunteers provide disaster relief assistance to victims of house fires, assist local families in contacting members of the Armed Forces in times of emergency; assist with blood drives in our local area; teach various first aid, CPR, and Water Safety programs; assist with fund raising projects; educate people in the community about disaster preparedness; answer phones and assist with clerical work at the Chapter office; and serve on various leadership committees

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Laurel Region, Inc.

Purpose: The Big Brothers movement began in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1903.  The one-to-one philosophy slowly took hold over the next forty years. In 1946, thirteen Big Brothers Association joined forces and formed Big Bothers of America, one of the few social welfare organizations to be chartered by the Congress of the United States. Today there are over 500 autonomous agencies throughout the world serving youth. In 1970, Big Sisters Associations became Big Sisters of America, and in 1976 Big Brothers of America and Big Sisters of America. Our Agency is a full member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.  In 1976 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westmoreland County was formed to serve all of Westmoreland County.  Then in 1986 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westmoreland County became a full member agency with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.   After over a year of planning, in 2001 we expanded our service area to include both Westmoreland and Fayette Counties and changed our name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region.

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Available to participate in activities with the child on a regular and consistent basis. Able to make a minimum one year commitment once you are matched. Have access to a car, possess a valid driver's license, have a good driving history and proof of car insurance. Ability to have fun and to be a friend.

 Our Volunteers are also needed to serve on a number of committees.  Program, Marketing,  Finance,  Bowling for Kids Sake are just four of the various committees where volunteers are needed. Volunteers are asked to participate with a child on a regular basis and make at least a one year commitment once you are matched.

Purpose: The Blackburn Center provides emergency assistance, counseling, shelter, medical assistance, and legal assistance to victims of rape, incest, and domestic violence. In addition it provides education to area schools, companies, and organizations.

Boy Scouts of America

Purpose: The Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. Purpose: Briarcliff Pavilion for Specialized Care is a provider of skilled nursing services. It provides physical therapy, recreational therapy and dietary aid to its patients.

Purpose: Through presenting science that is entertaining, interactive, first hand, accessible, relevant, and understandable, Carnegie Science Center will develop the science literacy and participation in science and technology of the residents of Pittsburgh and the Tri-State region.

Volunteer Opportunities:. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available at the Science Center. The information desk is the place for you if you enjoy working with the public. If you have an eye for fixing things, a position in the technology areas might be for you. You may also choose to learn and teach science in ways fascinating to students through opportunities available in the education and exhibits divisions. Whatever your skills may be, there is always a volunteer opportunity for you.

Catholic Charities

Purpose: Catholic Charities USA is the membership association of one of the nation's largest social service networks. Catholic Charities agencies and institutions nationwide provide vital social services to people in need, regardless of their religious, social, or economic backgrounds. Catholic Charities USA supports and enhances the work of its membership by providing networking opportunities, national advocacy and media efforts, program development, training and technical assistance, and financial support.

Purpose: To collect blood and deliver comprehensive blood products and services that enable medical professionals to provide the most effective and efficient patient care, and apply focused investments in transfusion and related medical areas to leverage organization resources for the next generation of scientific and community development

Canteen Assistant - Canteen Assistants are stationed in the canteen areas to assist the donors, serve refreshments and most importantly, to thank the donors for their "gift of life". This volunteer position is extremely important, since our canteen assistants are the last opportunity to ensure that our donors have a positive donating experience. In addition, Canteen Assistants are on hand to answer donors' questions about donating. Prior to volunteering as a Canteen Assistant, Central Blood Bank will train you on the most frequently asked canteen questions.

Office Assistant - Office Assistants are needed on a continual basis at our Downtown Pittsburgh office to help with filing, mailings, data entry, typing and phone calls. For those of you that are more interested in working behind the scenes and in an office environment, this would be the volunteer opportunity for you.

Purpose: Following the mission of Habitat for Humanity International, Central Westmoreland Habitat aspires to build safe, decent affordable housing in cooperation with partner families. Chelian Heights School for Exceptional children

Purpose: Clelian Heights is a Catholic, educational facility which provides a full range of quality services to persons with developmental disabilities in residential and day programs. The school currently has an enrollment of approximately 100 children and young adults. Clelian Heights brings about positive changes in the lives of the children and young adults and their families through an atmosphere of choice, and mutual acceptance. The curriculum is designed to meet the special needs of students beginning at the age of 5 and continuing on through adulthood. Clelian Heights offers opportunities for individualized instruction with a balanced program of academic, social, spiritual, vocational and daily living experience.

East End Cooperative Ministry

Purpose: East End Cooperative Ministry, Inc. (EECM) is an interfaith coalition of 47 congregations, parishes and institutions united to serve human needs of Pittsburgh's East End residents.

EECM serves the frail, the homebound elderly, the hungry, the homeless and children and youth in the neighborhoods of East Liberty, Garfield, Lincoln-Lemington, and Larimer by providing urgent necessities such as food and shelter; EECM also offers a wide range of programs that help individuals and families escape the cycle of poverty and gain the personal resources they need for more satisfying, self-supporting lives.

Orr Compassionate Care Center
Volunteers are needed 24 hours a day to help provide nonmedical respite care for people recovering from illness.

Family Hospice

Purpose: Family Hospice and Palliative Care provides support and care for people with life limiting illness and their families. At a time when caring matters most, with Family Hospice and Palliative Care you or your loved one may remain at home in peace, comfort and with dignity. A team of professionals and volunteers who are trained to focus on the whole person-- physical, emotional, mental and spiritual provides hospice services.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers play a critical role at Family Hospice and Palliative Care. There are many ways you can help…find the one that best matches you!

Direct Patient/Family Volunteers provide emotional support and companionship to the patient by reading, listening, etc. They also run errands, shop or provide meals. 15 hours of training is required. Volunteers are asked to give 4 hours a week when volunteering with patients.

Bereavement Volunteers make telephone calls or visit bereaved family members, write personalized bereavement notes, and assist with bereavement support groups. Some volunteers belong to the Yearlings, a group for bereaved volunteers who make crafts for patients. 15 hours of training is required.

Clerical Volunteers offer support and assistance in the offices by answering phones, typing, computer data entry, bulk mailing, and filing. No training required.

Special Events Volunteers help with planning annual funding raising events, speak to groups on behalf of Family Hospice and Palliative Care. The Friends of Family Hospice and Palliative Care is a volunteer auxiliary group that promotes community awareness and develops and implements ideas for fundraising activities. No training is required.

Community of Faith Volunteers are a network of volunteers tending to the spiritual dimensions and comfort of individuals within their community. Volunteers offer prayerful presence, attentive listening, supportive conversation and meditative and spiritual reading. Training is required

Teen Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of volunteering at Family Hospice and Palliative Care. Specific training and guidance is provided.

Friends of Hospice is the Family Hospice and Palliative Care auxiliary group of individuals who do some fundraising through card parties and also promote community awareness.

Bulk Mailing Volunteers assist the office staff by stuffing and sealing envelopes to get the material ready for bulk mailings.

Purpose: Greensburg Civic Theatre is one of only a few long-established, volunteer-based, community theatre organizations in Westmoreland County.  Now in its 50th season, the non-profit corporation was founded by a small group of people who wanted to provide a forum for local actors and theatre craftsmen, including costumers, set builders, and lighting and sound technicians.

Purpose: Guardian Angels Pug Rescue (GAPR), formerly known as Southwestern
Pennsylvania Pug Rescue (SPPR), is a non-profit 501c4 volunteer organization.  
GAPR started as a one person rescue in 1987 and became increasingly more
popular with pug enthusiasts.  By 1995, it was essential to move to the next step
and become an organization, which at the time, was known as Southwestern
Pennsylvania Pug Rescue (SPPR).  Due to several changes within the
organization, SPPR changed it's name to Guardian Angels Pug Rescue.

Purpose: Founded in 1911, Magee-Women’s Hospital is one of the nation’s leading hospitals devoted exclusively to the care of women and infants.

Volunteer Opportunities: The Volunteer Aide Corp is made up of members from the Pittsburgh community who regularly give their time to Magee- Women’s Hospital and its patients. Among the areas in which members volunteer are Labor & Delivery, Education, Admitting, the Breast Care Center, Patient Accounts and The Children's Center of Pittsburgh. The Volunteer Aide Corp also provides a diversional activities cart to patients. Free parking and meal tickets are provided to volunteers on the day that they volunteer.

Contact law enforcement agencies and read local newspapers to find out about drunk driving crashes, then send out "We Care" cards to the victims of these tragic events.

Lend your leadership skills as a chapter, state or national officer.

VISIT THE COURTS
Ensure that drunk driving offenders are punished to the fullest extent of the law by monitoring court cases and reporting outcomes to the community and media.

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES
Join MADD members in hosting public awareness events such as mock-crashes, parades, fairs, safe proms and graduation events.

TIE ONE ON
Distribute MADD red ribbons to encourage people not to drink and drive.  Tie a MADD red ribbon on your vehicle to show your commitment to driving safe and sober.

BE A ROLE MODEL
Assist youth in learning about the dangers of underage drinking and lead the way in making positive changes.

SPEAK OUT
Present facts about and solutions for drunk driving and underage drinking by speaking at schools, civic groups, organizations and clubs.

Purpose: Our teams of caregivers consist of registered nurses, physicians, home healthcare aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors and trained volunteers. They provide what is called palliative care to the patient, that is, care that helps ease pain and discomforting symptoms.

Odyssey Companion – provides companionship to the patient and family, tasks may include visiting with the patient, listening to the patient, relieving a caregiver, running small errands, light housekeeping, and other activities.

 

Bereavement Team Member -  assist the Bereavement Coordinator in supporting the family members of deceased patients.  Tasks may include making phone calls, mailing letters of support, and assisting with support groups.

 

Odyssey Office Support – assist the office staff with light secretarial tasks.  This position may include filing, copying, mailings, medical records, and answering phone calls.

Purpose: We assist veterans of all conflicts (and in-between), and although Vietnam veterans represent the largest population served by our program, we have begun to see increasing numbers of Gulf War (I & II) veterans needing assistance. The Center provides services through three primary programs: psychological counseling/therapy, benefits counseling/advocacy, and employment assistance. Supplementing these programs are support services including transportation, referrals, and emergency needs assistance. Over the course of a year we will assist over 500 veterans with our programs.
