The Norman N. McWhinney Scholarships in English Literature
at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg

The Department of English is pleased to announce the McWhinney Scholarships in English Literature. Distinguished children’s dentist and author Dr. Christopher Luccy (UPG 1967-1968) recently pledged an annual donation of $2,000, in the name of his most inspirational teacher, Professor Emeritus Norman McWhinney, to be awarded in the fall term each academic year to two undergraduates for “excellence in written communication.”

One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a junior and one scholarship of $1,000 to a senior. The junior scholarship is open to UPG students who have completed at least 60 credits toward graduation with a degree in English literature. The senior scholarship is open to UPG students who have completed at least 90 credits toward graduation with a degree in English literature. Nominees must have achieved a GPA of 3.50 or above in the major, and a 3.25 GPA overall. The McWhinney Scholarship students must maintain those averages during the period of the scholarship. The junior scholarship is renewable for the senior year.

Any member of the English faculty, and any senior faculty member in any discipline at the Greensburg Campus, may nominate a student for the scholarship. The letter of nomination should include verification of the student’s grade averages and a detailed critique of his or her essay writing. When available, samples of the student’s papers or essay exams would make the best kind of supporting documentation.

The award committee is accepting nominations through the first week in December 2008. Results will be released by January 2009.

Send letters of nomination and relevant documents to Dr. Richard Blevins, Humanities chair, 204 Faculty Office Building. Please direct inquiries to rblevins@pitt.edu.
