Overview of the English Composition Program

Students at Pitt-Greensburg must demonstrate competency in college-level writing, and courses offered through the English Composition program are designed to prepare students for the writing challenges they will face as university students and as educated people. Most students enroll in College Composition 1 and College Composition 2 as freshmen in their fall and spring semesters. In a few cases, the department waives the Comp 1 requirement for students whose transcripts demonstrate advanced skills. Passing Composition 2 satisfies the first composition requirement.

After they have completed 60 credits of coursework, students must then take one more advanced composition course numbered higher than Composition 2 (0020). This is nearly always a version of Composition 3, offered in three forms: Advanced Writing, Written Professional Writing, and Technical Writing. These courses are designed to give students more experience with analytical research and workplace writing, and should be chosen carefully to coincide with the student's interest and chosen field of study. To clarify the differences between the three versions of Composition 3, brief descriptions follow:

Composition 0030: The Three Versions:

  • Advanced Writing: Most sections of Comp 3 are Advanced Writing, and most students enroll in this version. Advanced Writing is ideal for humanities and social sciences majors, including those in Administration of Justice and Psychology.

  • Written Professional Writing: designed for students majoring in business, finance, and accounting, or planning careers in these areas.

  • Technical Writing: useful for math and science majors, especially computer science, information technology, natural sciences, biology, and chemistry. Or for students of any discipline seeking careers in high-tech industry, technical support, or science writing.
