But words are things, and a small drop of ink,
Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.
from Lord Byron's Don Juan

Welcome to a vibrant community of writers! We offer an exceptionally diverse choice of four-year degree programs in English Writing and English Literature. Internationally respected for their publications, our energetic faculty often achieve the highest honors within the Pitt system for their quality teaching. Our English clubs are some of the most actively engaged on campus and regularly organize poetry readings, film discussions, and career workshops at the campus coffee house and Millstein Library. Many of our majors run the campus newspaper, The Insider, and coordinate publication of the campus creative writing journal, Pendulum. We provide many opportunities unavailable at the downtown Pittsburgh campus, including a chapter of the international English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, and an individualized senior capstone experience. While our faculty and students work closely together in small classes, workshops, and roundtable discussions, we benefit from access to Pitt's large university network of libraries and computing technology.

We graduate highly adaptable, creative people prepared for a wide range of careers and graduate study in teaching, journalism, free-lance writing, editing and publishing, public relations, library science, law, and management. English majors are widely recognized in professions as diverse as medicine and business to be excellent negotiators and communicators, adept at processing complex information and explaining alternative points of view. Beyond career mobility, studying English can bring the lifelong rewards of a passion for literature as well as authority and grace in writing style. If you love to read and write and if you seek a lively, nurturing community of peers and teachers, come study English with us!
