So,
your student has to attend
Summer
Orientation & Academic Registration (S.O.A.R.)…
now
what?
A
Guide to Parents/Guardians Frequently Asked Questions about S.O.A.R.
Also, get ADVICE
from UPG faculty, students and staff.
-
Do I have to attend?
No,
but you are encouraged and welcome to attend! Of the 551 first-year students
that attended S.O.A.R. 2002, 335 brought at least one guest. If you cannot
or do not want to attend, your student certainly won't be the only one without
a parent/guardian with them.
-
Why should I attend?
You
will be given the opportunity to meet with and hear from representatives
from many different departments on campus. You will learn about some of
the expectations that will be placed on your first-year student. You will
be able to ask questions, receive answers, and share information with other
parents/guardians.
-
What if I can't attend?
When
your student returns from S.O.A.R., ask questions and ask to see the folder
of material each student receives. Consult the Helpful Phone Numbers list
and call the appropriate offices to get the information you need. You may
wish to be a part of our e-mail connection -- call Karen Gavula at 724-836-7497
or e-mail her at upgkg@pitt.edu to sign
up.
-
Is there a fee?
Yes.
A fee of $40 is assessed for those parents/guardians not staying on campus;
for those staying on campus, the fee is $55. The fee covers meals, materials,
evening entertainment and linens for those staying. Unfortunately, the
fee is not pro-rated if you must leave early or can't attend the second
day.
-
Will I be with my student?
Please
consult the tentative schedule. You will not be with your student
about half the time. You will be with your student for meals and for the
evening entertainment. You will not be with your student during their placement
exams or during their class registration times.
-
How many parents/guardians stay
on campus?
137 parents/guardians stayed on campus during S.O.A.R.
2002. Parents/guardians are housed in a different area than the students.
You will be housed in a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom air-conditioned apartment. If
attending alone, you will be housed with other parents of the same gender. If
attending with a significant other, you will be housed with another couple.
-
Can I bring my sister/other children/friend,
etc?
Small children can easily become bored (as you know! J ), so they sometimes
have a difficult time at S.O.A.R. Older children are welcome, as are other
family members. It's up to you!
Enjoying a moment
to catch up on what
each other has been up
too...
Still have questions?
That's OK!
