Information Science (Bachelor of Science)

Information Science is concerned with the way people create, collect, organize, store, retrieve, communicate, and use information. It deals with the problems of finding the proper combination of people, procedures, and machines in the design of information systems. Students are instructed in the state of relevant technology, how it can be applied to information problems, and the human limitations in the application and use of technology. Information science is an interdisciplinary field that draws on resources from mathematics, logic, psychology, sociology, computer science, library science, statistics, economics, and data processing. Information scientists have a unique combintation of skills enabling them to integrate and use various perspectives in understanding information needs and to apply the most appropriate technique to meet these needs.

Admission to Information Science

The Information Science program is offered at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg through a cooperative effort with the School of Information Sciences (SIS) in Pittsburgh. Since Information Science is an upper-division program, students will initally apply for admission to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (UPG). During the first two years, students will pursue the distribution of studies for Information Science majors.

Students must have earned 60 credits with a minimum 2.00 cumulative quality point average (QPA) and have at least a 2.50 QPA in any Information Science courses taken. Meeting these minimum qualifications does not guarantee admission to the program. No more than 15 credits of Information Science course work may be taken prior to formal admission to the program.

Applications for admission into the Information Science program may be made for any term. Students who are already enrolled in the University and meet the minimum qualifications stated above may apply by completing an application form in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Major and Related Field Requirements for Information Science

All students are required to complete either a standard or intensive major option and have at least five courses (15 hours) in a related field (minor).

Standard Major Option
A total of 30 credit hours of Information Science courses, no more than 15 of which may be taken prior to admission to SIS.
