Services are available for all majors and class standings.
Career testing and Assessment
For those who are uncertain about their majors or areas of interest,
CAREER TESTING and ASSESSMENT, helps students learn about their interests,
values and skills. Testing is free and often takes an hour to complete.
Career Exploration
CAREER EXPLORATION is an important part of deciding what to major
in
as well as learning what you can do with a certain degree. Students may
use SIGI, a computerized guidance system, located in the Career Resource
Library (217 Chambers Hall) to gather information about various occupations.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/ocohome.htm
provides
a wealth of information on careers. Other methods for exploring careers
include reading books and materials and talking with professionals in your
field of interest (a list of Pitt-Greensburg alumni is available in the
Career Services Office.)
Internships and Experience
For those looking ahead to the job market, yes, employers prefer students
who have some related experience (internship, part-time work, summer abroad,
special projects). Career services assists students in learning about INTERNSHIPS
and HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES. When applying for internship credit, students
must have faculty approval of the position and site.
Professional Development
Another area of importance is PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Each semester
a program called the Career Seminar of the
UPG Edge is offered
to juniors, seniors and alumni. This special event features presenters
from various backgrounds and organizations who teach students how to prepare
for a successful job hunt as well as learn about on-the-job issues. This
one day conference is free of charge and is highly recommended by Dr. Frank
Cassell, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
Resumes
and Interviewing Skills
Whether students are looking for part-time, internship or full-time
work, help is available in WRITING RESUMES and PREPARING for INTERVIEWS.
The UPG Career Counselor can assist students and alumni in developing or
fine-tuning their resume. Excellent interviewing skills are essential in
landing a position. Students/alumni may sign up for mock interviews
or a special session to talk about interviewing strategies.
