Men’s Soccer Update
Bobcats on a tear
The UPG men’s soccer team brought a three game winning streak into its September 16 home contest against Westminster. However, the two teams played through two overtimes to a 0-0 tie, thus ending the Bobcats streak of victories. The Bobcats are currently in first place in the American Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) with a 3-2-2 overall record. Sophomore Brandon Migitsch leads the team seven goals this season. Sophomore Mike Tintera and junior Corey Yerace have scored two goals and one goal, respectively, for the Bobcats this season. Tintera is also the Bobcats’ leader in assists with four. The Bobcats host AMCC foe Frostburg on Tuesday, September 26 and Penn-State Behrend on Saturday September 30.

The UPG women’s soccer team has shown the struggles typical of a first-year program. An overall lack of experience has hurt the Lady Bobcats early in the season. With 11 freshmen on the 17 player roster, the Lady Bobcats field a very young albeit enthusiastic squad. Despite being outscored 31-0 in their first four games this season, the Lady Bobcats have maintained a positive attitude. With continued improvement, good hustle and a good attitude, the wins will come for this team. The Lady Bobcats will host conference rival Frostburg on September 26 and Penn State-Behrend September 30.

The UPG women’s tennis team currently stands in fifth place in AMCC competition. However, the team is young and with only one junior on the roster. The remainder of the team is made up of sophomores and freshmen. In the Lady Bobcats’ September 16 match against Penn-State Altoona, sophomore Kristin Schotting put forth a strong effort by winning both of her matches in #2 singles and #1 doubles. The effort was good enough to earn Schotting an honorable mention for AMCC Tennis Athlete of the Week.
The 0-5 Lady Bobcats volleyball team is still searching for its first victory. However in losses Waynesburg, Washington and Jefferson, Thiel, Pitt-Johnstown and most recently Carlow, the team showed signs of improvement. The roster is young and features eight freshmen to complement two seniors and one sophomore. On Wednesday, September 27, the Lady Bobcats host Penn-State Altoona before traveling to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, September 30.
