The Bobcats opened their week with a 75-59 defeat of Thiel on Monday, Dec. 4. The visiting Bobcats led 44-34 at halftime and never looked back as they shot 57 percent from the floor in the game and cruised to the win.
Freshman guard Tory Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) led the Bobcats with 16 points and three steals. Freshman forward Nicole Kushner (Canon McMilla H.S.) scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bobcats. Freshman forward Cassie Ross (Albert Gallatin H.S.) scored 11 points for the Bobcats while sophomore forward Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.) added 10 points. Freshman guard Krystal Shirk (Thomas Jefferson H.S.) led the Bobcats with 3 assists in the win.
Following the victory over Thiel, the Bobcats were back home for the first AMCC game of the season against Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The Bobcats trailed the Cougars 26-25 at halftime but rallied in the second half and took a 50-49 lead with just 46 seconds remaining in the game. Following a Cougars’ turnover, Shirk hit two free-throws to put the Bobcats up for good at 52-49.
Auld again led the Bobcats in scoring with 10 points. Freshman guard Ann Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) picked up a team-high five steals for the Bobcats. Ross and Kushner each scored eight points for the Bobcats while also grabbing nine rebounds and eight rebounds, respectively. Sophomore forward Kimberli Verosko (Keystone Oaks H.S.) and guard Jordan Fox scored eight points each for the Bobcats.
As a team, the Bobcats shot only 33 percent from the field but connected on 6-12 three-point attempts, good for 50 percent.
The Bobcats looked to make it a perfect 3-0 for the week as they traveled to Lake Erie for the second AMCC conference game.
Led by Arnold’s 29 points and five blocked shots, the Bobcats easily downed Lake Erie, 64-42. Also scoring in double figures for the Bobcats were Kushner and Verosko, who scored 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Kushner and Verosko also did a fine job on the glass, combining for 23 rebounds.
For her 29-point, five-rebound, five-block effort against Lake Erie, Arnold received honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.
The Bobcats are 5-3 overall with a 2-0 record in conference play. The Bobcats will travel to Bethany College in West Virginia on Saturday, Dec. 16 for the final game of the first semester. The Bobcats are then off until after the New Year, their first game back will be a rematch against Thiel on Saturday, Jan. 6.
The Bobcats picked up their first win of the season last week in a 91-79 victory over the Penn State-Altoona Cougars. Unfortunately for the Bobcats though, the win was sandwiched between two losses.
The Bobcats opened the week with a tough 117-66 loss at York College (York, Pa.). In the loss to York, the Bobcats shot 36 percent from the field compared to York’s 68 percent shooting. Senior guard Josh Sapotichne (Greensburg Salem H.S.) led the Bobcats with 20 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) collected 19 points and added two steals for the Bobcats. Senior guard/forward Rick Leahew handed out a team-high four assists for UPG.
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the Bobcats were back home to face AMCC foe Penn State-Altoona. Led by Leahew’s 15 points and 6 rebounds and sophomore forward Anthony DeCosmo’s 10 points and eight rebounds, the Bobcats took a 42-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.
As a team, the Bobcats shot 44 percent from the floor in the first half, including 5-12 from three-point range. In the second half, the Bobcats opened with a 7-1 run and held off a Cougars rally to hang on for UPG’s first win of the season.
Leahew scored a team-high 20 points in the win. Leahew also grabbed 10 rebounds while DeCosmo (Thomas Jefferson H.S.) added 15 points and 11 rebounds in the victory. Sophomore forward Garret Treese (Hempfield Area H.S.) scored 17 points for the Bobcats. For the game, the Bobcats shot 41 percent from the floor and 36 percent from behind the three-point line.
After the home win against the Cougars, the Bobcats were back on the road for a contest at AMCC opponent Lake Erie on Saturday, Dec. 9.
Despite shooting 50 percent as a team, the Bobcats fell to Lake Erie 90-52. Sapotichne again led the Bobcats with 17 points. In addition to scoring, Sapotichne also passed the ball well, dishing out a team-high eight assists and recorded a steal. Sophomore forward Mike Dudek (Woodland Hills H.S.) scored 13 points while DeCosmo added 12 points for the Bobcats. Treese brought down a team high 12 rebounds in the loss.
Treese was nominated for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for coming off the bench to score 24 points and collect 15 rebounds in the Bobcats two conference games last week.
The Bobcats are 1-8 overall with a 1-1 conference record. They will travel to Thiel on Saturday. Dec. 16 and will participate in a tournament at Albright the weekend of Jan. 6.
