Women’s Basketball Update

The Bobcats went 2-1 last week with wins against Washington & Jefferson College (Washington, Pa.) and Waynesburg College (Waynesburg, Pa.).  The Bobcats’ lone loss came at Grove City College (Grove City, Pa.).

At William & Jefferson on Monday, Nov. 27, the Bobcats shot 35 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 32-27 at halftime.

In the second half, the Bobcats’ shooting improved to 40 percent while the Bobcats held W& J to just 33 percent shooting.  Defense and solid free-throw shooting (85 percent in the first half) led to a Bobcats comeback and a 65-62 victory.

Freshman guard Ann Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) scored 18 points and recorded four steals to lead the Bobcats.  Sral added five rebounds to her stat line while sophomore forward Kimberli Verosko (Keystone Oaks H.S.) grabbed six rebounds for the Bobcats.  Freshman forward.  Freshman forward Nicole Kushner scored 15 points in the win.

Following the trip to W & J, the Bobcats hosted Waynesburg on Wednesday, Nov. 29.  Sral played another solid game, recording eight points, six rebounds, and four steals in the 54-41 win.  Freshman guard Tory Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) led the Bobcats with 14 points and four assists while freshman forward Cassie Ross (Albert Gallatin H.S.) scored 10 points for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats tried to make it a perfect 3-0 for the week but came up short against Grove
City on Saturday, Dec. 2.  No Bobcat scored in double figures and UPG dropped the
game, 48-43.

Kushner led the Bobcats with nine points and six rebounds while Sral scored eight points
and grabbed four rebounds and and got a steal.  Freshman guard Krystal Shirk (Thomas
Jefferson H.S.) handed out five assists in the win.

For her solid performances, Sral received a nomination for AMCC Women’s
Basketball Athlete of the Week.  Sral scored 34 points, hauled in 15 rebounds, and
recorded nine steals in the Bobcats’ three games.

The Bobcats are now 3-3 overall and will host Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday, Dec. 6
and close the week by traveling to Lake Erie on Saturday, Dec. 9.


Men’s Basketball Update

 The Bobcats went 0-3 during the week but received a huge lift by senior guard Josh Sapotichne (Greensburg Salem H.S.) who earned a nomination for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.  Sapotichne scored 72 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and handed out 8 assists in three games for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats opened the week at Washington & Jefferson College on Monday, Nov. 27.  The Bobcats trailed 47-35 at the half after shooting 38 percent from the field, compared to W & J’s 57 percent shooting.

From their, the Bobcats played W & J close in the second half, but dropped the game, 81-68.  Sophomore forward Anthony DeCosmo (Thomas Jefferson H.S.) led the Bobcats with 16 points while Sapotichne scored 14 points and handed out three assists for the Bobcats.  Freshman guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) also scored 14 points and handed out a team-high seven assists for the Bobcats.  Winfrey also led the Bobcats by bringing down seven rebounds.

As a team, the Bobcats shot 42 percent from the field and just 19 percent from behind the three-point line.  The Bobcats also converted on just 47 percent of their free-throw attempts.

The Bobcats were back at home on Wednesday, Nov. 29 to play Waynesburg.  Despite 37 points, nine rebounds, and one assist by Sapotichne, the Bobcats dropped a double-overtime thriller, 100-97 to the Yellow Jackets.

The Bobcats shot 43 percent from the field in the first half, including 8 of 15 from behind the three-point stripe.  The Bobcats led by as many as 11 in the first half but took just a three point lead, 41-38, into the locker room at halftime.  Sapotichne scored 19 points in the first half and hit five three-point field goals.

In the second half, the Bobcats were led by sophomore forward Mike Dudek’s (Woodland Hills H.S.) 12 second-half points but couldn’t put the Yellow Jackets away.  A Waynesburg free-throw tied the score at 75 with just 18 seconds left.  Neither team could get off a good shot in the closing seconds and the game went into overtime.

Winfrey opened the extra session with a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 78-75 lead but the Yellow Jackets again tied the game at 86 with just 34 seconds to play.  Waynesburg nearly picked up the victory on a layup with just one second remaining but UPG senior forward Rick Leahew (Keystone Oaks H.S.) saved the game with a huge block that sent the game into a second overtime period with the score tied 86-86.

Waynesburg took the lead in the opening minute of the second overtime and never trailed, hanging on for a 100-97 lead.

Junior guard Clint Roche (Gateway H.S.) scored 18 points for the Bobcats while Leahew scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out seven assists.  For Sapotichne, eight of his game-high 37 points came in the overtime periods.

The Bobcats finally closed their week at Grove City College on Saturday, Dec. 2.  The Bobcats trailed at halftime, 27-25 after shooting 42 percent from the field.  In the first half, Sapotichne scored seven points on 2 of 7 shooting.

In the second half, Sapotichne got hot, connecting on 7 of his 9 second-half field goal attempts.  Winfrey also came on strong with 15 second-half points but the efforts of Sapotichne and Winfrey weren’t enough as the Bobcats were outscored 44-36 in the second half and dropped the game 69-63.

The Bobcats were led by Josh Sapotichne who scored 21 points and handed out 4 assists.  Winfrey scored 20 points for the Bobcats while DeCosmo and Leahew each grabbed six rebounds.

For the game, the Bobcats shot 46 percent form the field, including 42 percent from three-point territory.

The Bobcats are now 0-6 overall with a 0-3 record in conference play.  The Bobcats host Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday, Dec. 6 before making a trip to Lake Erie on Saturday, Dec. 9.
