Women’s Basketball Update
Bobcats fall to 0-5

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats were in action twice last week, suffering losses to Bethany and Grove City, respectively.

The Bobcats began the week at home against Bethany on Nov. 27.  Despite 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals by sophomore guard Annie Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.), it was not enough as the Bobcats lost 61-54.  Junior Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.) was the only other Bobcat in double figures as she scored 10 points to go with six boards and a steal.  Freshman Amy Ploskunak (Plum H.S.) scored nine points and collected six boards.

The Bobcats went into the locker room at halftime trailing 32-22 after turning the ball over 18 times and struggling to advance the ball against Bethany’s pressing defense. But in the second half, the Bobcats turned things around, turning the ball over just six times and held Bethany to just 2-11 from behind the three-point line.  For the game, the Bobcats shot 39-percent from the floor and converted on 9-17 free-throws, good for 53-percent.

The Bobcats had four days to get over the loss to Bethany before hosting Grove City on Dec. 1.  Grove City’s full-court press limited UPG’s scoring opportunities in the first half as the Bobcats scored just 19 points.

In the second half, the Bobcats’ struggles continued as UPG scored 20 points and went 0-7 from three-point land. Sral again led the Bobcats with 11 points and five rebounds.  Ploskunak scored seven points and grabbed seven caroms in the loss.

Sral was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after averaging 15 ppg, 7 rpg, and 3 spg in the two games.

The 66-39 defeat dropped the Bobcats to 0-5 overall.  UPG, currently in sixth place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, begins AMCC play on Dec. 5 at Penn State-Altoona and hosts AMCC rival Pitt-Bradford on Dec. 8.

Men’s Basketball Update
Bobcats have 2-1 week

Going into the third week of the 2001-02 season, the Bobcats have already matched last year’s win total as they cruised to a 92-79 home-win against Washington & Jefferson on Nov. 26 and held off Thiel in a 78-73 win on Dec. 1.  The Bobcats’ only setback was a 91-79 loss at Waynesburg (Waynesburg, Pa.) on Nov. 28.

Against W&J, the Bobcats shot a solid 48-percent from the floor and had five players score in double figures.  Freshman Phil Grenda (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the win while fellow freshman Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) scored 17 points and handed out three assists for UPG.  Junior Jeff Fisher (Bethel Park H.S.) and freshman Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) scored 11 points each for the Bobcats while sophomore Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) chipped in with 10 points.

Against Waynesburg, things did not go as smoothly for the Bobcats as 79 points were not enough to secure a road win.  Freshman John Pulley (South Western H.S.) led UPG with 14 points while junior Mike Dudek (Woodland Hills H.S.) scored 12 points and handed out four assists.  Grenda scored 11 points to go with six caroms and Moye scored 10 points and hauled down four boards.  Freshman Nate Watkins (Schenley H.S.) scored 11 points and handed out a game-high six assists in the loss.

Finally, the Bobcats returned home to close the week against Thiel on Dec. 1.  The Bobcats connected on 52-percent of their shots from the floor and hit 78-percent from the free-throw line.  Grenda scored 14 points and collected five boards to go with two steal and was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after averaging 14 points, 8.3 rebounds and two steals during the week.

Moye scored 1-6 points against the Tomcats while freshman Nick Tomsko scored 11 and Pulley added 10.

The Bobcats are now 2-4 overall.  They begin AMCC play at PSU-Altoona and host conference foe Pitt-Bradford on Dec. 8.
