The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women’s soccer team finished its season with a 7-3 loss at Hiram College on Oct. 22. The Bobcats, in their second year of women’s soccer, finished the season with a 4-12 mark. In Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, the Bobcats finished 2-4.
The four wins not only marked the first ever win for UPG in women’s soccer but set the single season mark for wins. The Bobcats scored 35 goals this season also a best. Melissa Wiggins (Beaver HS), who earned AMCC Player of the Week honors this past season, scored 24 goals on the year, setting the single season and all-time mark at UPG. She was voted to the AMCC Women’s Soccer 1st Team. Joining her was Dana Tietsworth (Burrell HS) on the 2nd Team.
The Bobcats had a difficult week, suffering two one-point losses. However the week wasn’t entirely bad for the Bobcats; they managed a 4-0 home victory over Ohio Valley on Oct. 23.
Sophomore Mike Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.) got the Bobcats offense started with a goal in just the second minute of play. Junior Bill McIntosh (South Park H.S.) and freshman Dan Stern (North Star H.S.) then added two more goals before Bill Rounsley scored the game’s final goal in the 85th minute.
The win came between the two losses for the Bobcats who are now in second place in the AMCC. On Oct. 22, the Bobcats suffered a 3-2 loss to Washington & Jefferson, despite out-shooting the Presidents 18-13. Freshman Dave Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.) and sophomore Brendan Walk (McKeesport H.S.) scored for UPG. The Bobcats failed to convert two scoring chances late in the contest. The second loss of the week for the Bobcats came in a 4-3 defeat to Juniata.
The Bobcats, the second seed in the AMCC, will play Penn State-Behrend in the opening round of the AMCC tournament on Nov. 2. The tournament will be held at Frostburg State University (Frostburg, Md.)
The Bobcats broke a seven-match losing streak with a 3-0 home win against AMCC foe Lake Erie on Oct. 27. The win pushed the Bobcats to 6-16 overall with a 2-9 record in the AMCC.
The victory over Lake Erie came less than a week after a 3-0 home loss to AMCC foe Frostburg State on Oct. 23. In game one, the Bobcats held a 29-24 lead before falling 32-30 in game one. From there, the Bobcats continued to struggle, losing by scores of 30-18 and 30-18.
