Updates
The Bobcats capped their home schedule for 2001 with a 6-0 victory over Chatham on Oct. 16. Sophomore co-captain Katie O’Brien (McGuffey H.S.) led the Bobcats with two goals and an assist in the game. Sophomore co-captain Lauri Altman (Greensburg Salem H.S.) and freshmen Raelyn Day (North Allegheny H.S.), Jessica Mancino (North Catholic H.S.), and Melissa Wiggins (Beaver H.S.) also contributed to the Bobcats’ cause by scoring one goal each. O’Brien was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week.
The win improved the Bobcats to 4-11 overall this season. In Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, UPG posted a 2-4 mark. The Bobcats end their season at Hiram College (Hiram, Ohio) with a non-conference game on Oct. 22.
The Bobcats hosted Carnegie Mellon University on Oct. 17. Although the game had no bearing on the AMCC standings, it was an opportunity for the Bobcats to make a statement against the 26th ranked team in NCAA Division III.
The Bobcats got a solid performance from goalkeeper Mitch Paterline (Penn Trafford H.S.), who recorded eight saves in a 2-0 loss. The Bobcats held CMU scoreless through the first half before giving up goals in the 54th minute and 78th minute. Paterline was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 6-7 overall but their 5-1 AMCC record still leaves them atop the conference standings. The Bobcats host Ohio Valley on Oct. 23 and Juniata on Oct. 27. Both games are non-conference contests. The Men’s Soccer team has secured the second seed in the AMCC by virtue of tie-breakers (UPG, Frostburg and Penn State Behrend are all 5-1). The Bobcats will play Penn State Behrend at Frostburg on November 2nd.
After a 7-0 loss to Chatham on Oct. 18, the Bobcats competed in the AMCC tournament on Oct. 20 at Frostburg (Frostburg, Md.) and finished in 4th Place.
In number-four singles, UPG junior Kristy Scholl (Norwin H.S.) advanced to the semifinals before losing 6-2 and 6-4 to Sara Obermeier of Penn State-Altoona. Scholl was the only UPG player to advance beyond the first round in singles competition.
In doubles action, the team of junior Lori Johnston (Shannock Valley H.S.) and freshman Andrea Cuda (Greater Latrobe H.S.) advanced to the semifinals before falling 8-4 to the team of Obermeier—and Erica Walters of PSU-Altoona.
The Bobcats finished their season with a 2-11 record, a 2-4 mark in
AMCC play.
Following a 3-0 home-loss to PSU-Altoona, the UPG Bobcats made the trip to Pitt-Bradford on Oct. 20 looking to snap a four-match losing streak. Unfortunately, they left Pitt-Bradford with a six-match losing streak after a 3-1 loss to Pitt-Bradford and a 3-0 loss to Grove City College.
The Bobcats pushed Pitt-Bradford to four games after the Bobcats avoided defeat with a 30-25 victory in the third game of the best-of-five series. The Bobcats scored 29, 24, and 23 points, respectively in the three losses.
Against Grove City College, the Bobcats were simply overmatched, falling 18-30, 24-30, and 12-30.
The Bobcats are now 5-12 overall with a 1-7 record in the AMCC.
They host AMCC foes Frostburg State on Oct. 23 and Lake Erie on Oct. 27.
