Men’s Golf Update
Thatcher named Golf Athlete of the Week

For the second straight week, the Bobcats can boast the AMCC Golf Athlete of the Week (for the week of October 2).  Junior Chuck Thatcher (Belle Vernon H.S.) earned the honor with his performance in the ECAC Men’s Open Golf Southern Regional on Thursday, September 28.  Thatcher shot a 74, which also qualified him for the finals, which will take place at Saratoga Springs, NY.   UPG senior golfer Ken Saksa earned AMCC Golf Athlete of the week honors for the week of September 25. UPG finished the ECAC with a team score of 312, which was good enough for fifth place, and first among DIII schools.

In the Bobcats other golf match last week, UPG finished the LaRoche Invitational in third place with a team score of 323.  Ken Saksa shot a 76 to lead the Bobcats.  Saksa’s 76 was good enough for the third best individual score of the invitational.

Women’s Soccer Update
First-year team continues to struggle

The Lady Bobcats dropped their home game against AMCC rival Frostburg on Tuesday, September 26 by the score of 10-1.  Freshman Katie O’Brien (McGuffey H.S.) scored the lone goal for the Lady Bobcats.  The goal was the second of the season for O’Brien.

Following the loss to Frostburg, the Lady Bobcats hosted Penn State Behrend on September 30.  The Lady Bobcats dropped the game 6-0.

The Lady Bobcats are 0-7 overall with a 0-3 conference record.  The Lady Bobcats host Mt. Aloysius on Saturday, October 7 and host Bethany on Monday, October 9.



Men’s Soccer Update
Bobcats have tough week

The Bobcats opened their week on Monday, September 25 with a home game against AMCC opponent, Frostburg.
The Bobcats opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead.  After Frostburg answered with a goal, the Bobcats scored again to regain the lead, 2-1.  However, the Bobcats couldn’t hold off the Frostburg attack, which would score another goal to force an overtime period.  In the overtime, The Bobcats were unable to score a goal and dropped the contest 3-2.   The Bobcats are 0-1-2 in overtime games this year.  Sophomore Mike Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.)  and Zach Froble each scored goals for the Bobcats.

On September 30, the Bobcats hosted Penn State-Behrend at Ridilla Fields. The Bobcats dropped the game 3-1.  For the season, the Bobcats are 3-5-2 with a 1-2 conference record.

The Bobcats travel to Waynesburg on Thursday, October 5 and host Mt. Aloysius on Saturday, October 7.


Women’s Tennis Update
Hilliard, Johnston, Schollpick up wins

The Lady Bobcats traveled to Thiel on Monday, September 25 for their seventh tennis meet of the season.

In singles competition, sophomores Lori Johnston (Shannock Valley H.S.) and Kristen Scholl (Norwin H.S.)  each tallied victories for UPG.  In doubles, the team of Kristen Scholl and freshman Jessie Hilliard (Shannock Valley H.S.)  picked up a victory.  But in the end, the efforts of Johnston, Hilliard, and Scholl would not be enough as the Lady Bobcats were defeated 6-3.

On Sunday, October 1 the Lady Bobcats were defeated at home by Penn State-Behrend 9-0.

On the season, the Lady Bobcats are 0-5 overall.   The Lady Bobcats travel host Frostburg on Thursday, October 5 before traveling to Lake Erie on October 6.  The Lady Bobcats have then rematch Penn State Behrend on Saturday, October 7.


Women’s Volleyball Update
Trio of lady Bobcats have strong performances

The Lady Bobcats played two games last week against Penn State-Altoona and Pitt-Bradford, respectively.

The Lady Bobcats dropped their home contest 3 games to 0 against Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday, September 27.  Freshman Holly Botti (Penn Trafford H.S.), freshman Angelica Carr (Dubois Area H.S.), and senior Casey Silvis (Greensburg Salem) all had strong performances for the Lady Bobcats.  Holly recorded 8 kills and 12 digs while Carr added 9 kills and 7 blocks.  Silvis recorded 12 digs in the 3 games.

Against Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, September 30, the Lady Bobcats managed to win a game but dropped the set 3-1.  In the loss, Holly recorded 8 kills and 6 digs while Carr had 7 kills and 7 blocks.  Silvis added 5 digs.

The Lady Bobcats are currently 1-8 overall with a 1-2 conference record.  The Lady Bobcats host Lake Erie on Friday, October 6 and Point Park College on Monday, October 9.
