Golf Update
Rain Cancels Golf Match

The golf match scheduled for Tuesday Oct. 10 at Meadville Country Club was cancelled due to rain.

The Bobcats will close their season on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Edinboro Frostbite Classic held at North Hills Country Club.  


Women’s Soccer Update
Bobcats Still Winless

Despite a cold autumn rain, the Bobcats played hard in their Monday, Oct. 9 home game against Bethany.  At halftime the Bobcats were only down 1-0 and were playing extremely well; however, the effort was not enough as the Lady Bobcats dropped the game 4-0.

On Saturday, Oct. 14 the Lady Bobcats traveled to LaRoche.  The Lady Bobcats played hard but once again came out on the wrong side of the score and dropped the contest 14-0.

The Lady Bobcats are 0-10 overall with a 0-4 record in AMCC play.  The Lady Bobcats will host Chatham on Tuesday, Oct. 17 before closing their season Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, Oct. 21.


Men’s Soccer Update
Bobcats End Week 1-1

The Bobcats opened the week on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a 4-3 victory at Washington & Jefferson College.  Sophomore Brandon Migitsch (Penn Trafford H.S.) scored the game-winning goal.  The goal was the fourth game-winning goal of the season for Migitsch.  On the season, Migitsch has 11 goals to his credit.

The Bobcats closed the week on Saturday, Oct. 14 in an away game against LaRoche.  When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of LaRoche.

Freshman Mike Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.), a native of Harrison City, PA, was named to the AMCC Men’s Soccer Honor Roll for the Week.  Tintera had an outstanding week scoring two goals and adding three assists.  Tintera had a part in every goal UPG scored last week.

The Bobcats are 5-6-2 overall with a 1-3 conference record.  They will travel to Ohio Valley on Thursday, Oct. 19 and to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, Oct. 21.  


Women’s Tennis Update
Johnston Earns Award as Lady Bobcats Earn First Victory Of The Season

The UPG Women’s Tennis Team had a busy week with three matches.
 
On Wednesday, Oct. 11 the Lady Bobcats traveled to AMCC rival Frostburg.  The Lady Bobcats battled to the end but dropped the contest 8-1.

On Friday, Oct.13, The Lady Bobcats decimated LaRoche 8-1 in singles competition and swept doubles 3-0.    Sophomore Jacqueline Billheimer (Connellsville H.S.), freshman Jessie Hilliard (Shannock Valley H.S.), sophomore Lori Johnston (Shannock Valley H.S.), sophomore Kristen Scholl (Norwin H.S.), and sophomore Kristin Schotting (Bethel Park) all earned victories in singles competition.

In doubles, the team of Billheimer and Schotting won its match 8-1.    The team of junior Angela Christy and Lori Johnston won 8-0.  Kristen Scholl and Heather Cox completed the sweep 8-0.

The Lady Bobcats finally closed their season on Sunday, Oct. 15 against Penn-State-Altoona.  Again, the Lady Bobcats fought hard but dropped the match 5-4.

For her efforts last week, Lori Johnston was named AMCC Tennis Athlete of the Week.  Johnston is a native of Kittaning, PA.

The AMCC Women’s Tennis Tournament will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Penn State Altoona.

Women’s Volleyball Update
Team celebrates Senior Night

The Lady Bobcats finished the week at 1-2 with the two losses coming against Point Park College and Penn State-Behrend, respectively.

On Monday, Oct. 9, the Lady Bobcats pushed Point Park College to five games in front of the UPG home fans.  In the fourth game freshman teammate Angelica Carr (Dubois Area H.S.) went down with an ankle injury and would not return.  The loss proved to be too much for the young team to handle and in the end, the Bobcats dropped the match 3 games to 2. Freshman Holly Botti (Penn Trafford H.S.) recorded 19 kills and 17 digs in the five games while Carr recorded seven kills before leaving with the injury.  Freshman Jody Miller (Connellsville Area H.S.) added two aces in the loss.

On Saturday, Oct. 14 the Lady Bobcats hosted Penn-State Behrend.  Despite a good effort, the Lady Bobcats dropped the match 3 games to 1.  Botti recorded 11 kills and 26 digs in the loss while teammate Tricia Paffey (Yough H.S.)  chipped in with 16 digs.  Paffey has performed very well since returning from an early season injury.

For her efforts, Botti, a Trafford native was named to the AMCC Volleyball Honor Roll for the Week.

Two seniors were recognized for Senior Night in the Lady Bobcats’ Oct. 12 home match against Laroche.  The Lady Bobcats celebrated Senior Night with a 3-1 victory.

Senior Beth Marr (Belle Vernon H.S.) recorded two digs in the victory while fellow senior Casey Silvis (Greensburg Salem H.S.) added four digs and a kill.

During her career, Marr, a native of Webster, PA, earned two letters as a defensive specialist for the UPG Volleyball team.  Marr is a Communications major and English Literature minor and is also active in the UPG community.  In addition to volleyball, Marr is the current President of the Student Activities Board at UPG.  Marr also serves as a member of the Judicial Board and is a SOAR (UPG’s freshman orientation program) leader.  During the fall of 2000, Marr was selected as UPG’s Homecoming Queen.  Following graduation, Marr plans to pursue a career in teaching.

During her career, Silvis earned four letters in volleyball while playing outside hitter and serving as a defensive specialist for the team.

Silvis, a Greensburg, PA, native, is a biology major.  Following graduation, Silvis wishes to work in the Environmental Sciences field.

The Lady Bobcats travel to Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and to Chatham on Thursday, Oct. 19.  The Lady Bobcats will play their last home contest of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they host Pitt-Bradford.
 

Led by senior Ken Saksa’s (Uniontown, H.S.) 75, the Bobcats claimed their third straight AMCC title after their victory in the  AMCC Championship at Hannastown on Tuesday, October 3.  Saksa’s 75 was the best individual score of the championships.

Saksa also earned AMCC Golf Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season.  Saska earned AMCC all-conference honors.  Joining Saksa on the AMCC all-conference golf team are sophomore Len Mohan (Latrobe H.S.), sophomore Brian Rosatti (Greensburg H.S.), and sophomore Sean Sapotichne (Greensburg Salem H.S.).
