Bobcat Weekly
Updates
Entering the week with a 2-2 record in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, and two home games this week the Bobcats looked poised to make noise in the Conference. However, UPG faltered twice this week and saw themselves fall below the .500 mark in Conference play.
The week opened on Oct. 3rd with a 3-1 home to Washington & Jefferson College. Freshman Nichole Whiteley (Corry H.S.) scored the Bobcats’ lone goal. On Oct 6th the Bobcats hosted LaRoche with an opportunity to go above .500 in the AMCC for the first time in their history. It was not to be as Freshman Melissa Wiggins (Beaver H.S.) scored the Bobcats lone goal in a 6-1 home loss. Whiteley also played a strong game for UPG.
Whiteley was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week.
The Bobcats are now 2-3 in AMCC play with a 3-9 record overall. They travel to Salem (Salem, WV) for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 10th. The final Conference game of the season will be at Penn State-Behrend in on Saturday, Oct. 13th.
A three-game winning streak came to a halt on Oct. 1 as the Bobcats lost to AMCC rival Bethany, 4-3. Falling behind early Freshman Steve Green (Riverview H.S.) started the scoring for the Bobcats with a goal just before the half to make the score 2-1. In the second half, the Bobcats fell behind 4-1 but fought back to within one goal. Freshman Brett Marion (Beaver H.S.) scored an unassisted goal in the game’s 73rd minute. Freshman Dave Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.) then ended the Bobcats’ scoring with a goal in the 85th minute off an assist from Green and sophomore Brendan Walk (McKeesport H.S.). However, the Bobcats ran out of time and the comeback fell short.
After the setback against Bethany, the Bobcats returned to form with a 4-0 home win over AMCC opponent LaRoche on Oct. 6. Tintera led the Bobcats with two goals and was named AMCC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. Green and junior co-captain Bill McIntosh also added goals for UPG.
The Bobcats are now atop the AMCC with a 4-1 record in conference play and a 5-5 mark overall. The Bobcats host Waynesburg in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 10 before making the trip to Penn State-Behrend for the final AMCC match on Saturday, Oct. 13th. The game shapes up to very important for the playoffs. While it is the final AMCC game for UPG, Penn State Behrend will still play LaRoche and Frostburg. Depending upon the outcome of those games UPG, Penn State Behrend and Frostburg could all still win the conference.
Sophomore Jessie Hilliard (Shannock Valley H.S.) came from behind to win her #5 singles match against non-conference foe Washington & Jefferson College on Oct. 3 but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats lost the match 7-2. Hilliard was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. The Bobcats only other win came from junior Kristy Scholl (Norwin H.S.) in #4 singles. The match scheduled for October 5th at Penn State-Behrend was postponed due to rain. No make-up date is set.
The loss puts the Bobcats at 2-8 overall and 2-4 in AMCC play. On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Bobcats travel to Penn State-Altoona for an AMCC showdown.
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats snapped an eight-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over AMCC foe Lake Erie on Oct. 6.
The Bobcats cruised to an easy 30-17 lead in game one but struggled some in game 2, coming away with a 36-34 victory. Finally UPG recovered in the third game with a 30-21 win.
The win at Lake Erie followed a 3-0 loss at AMCC foe Frostburg State on Oct. 2. The Bobcats pulled within one point, 25-24, in game one against Frostburg but then managed just two more points. The Bobcats then teased a win after taking an 8-6 lead in game two before falling 30-21. The Bobcats defense just wasn’t enough in game three as they gave up seven of the game’s final ten points in a 30-16 loss.
The Bobcats, 1-4 in the AMCC and 5-9 overall, travel to Carlow College (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on Thursday, Oct. 11 before returning home to host LaRoche in an AMCC match on Saturday, Oct. 13.
