Women’s Soccer Update
Wiggins Honored as Bobcats go 2-0

The Bobcats roared to two wins last week in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play to move to 2-2 in league play.

The Bobcats defeated Penn State-Altoona 3-2 at home on Wednesday, Sept. 26.  Freshman Melissa Wiggins (Beaver H.S.) scored all three goals in the win then followed up her performance with four more goals in a 5-3 win at Lake Erie on Saturday, Sept. 29.  Freshman Nichole Whitely (Corry H.S.) also scored for the Bobcats in Painesville, OH.

For her efforts Wiggins was named AMCC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.  With the two victories last week, the Bobcats evened their AMCC record to 2-2 and are 3-7 overall.  The Bobcats host Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday, Sept. 26.  The Bobcats then close their week by hosting AMCC foe LaRoche on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Men’s Soccer Update
Bobcats go 2-0; Paterline Wins Honor

With two conference wins last week, the Bobcats moved into second place in the AMCC standings.  The two wins held even further significance.  On Wednesday the Bobcats took both games of the doubleheader against Penn State Altoona, marking the first Women’s-Men’s soccer sweep in UPG history.  Saturday the Bobcats traveled to Lake Erie and matched that feat on the road for the first time.

The Bobcats first win was a 5-0 home victory over Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday, Sept. 26.  On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Bobcats defeated Lake Erie College on the road by a 7-0 score.   Mitch Paterline recorded the shutouts in both games bringing his season total to 3 and his career mark to 7.

On Wednesday Bobcats Steve Green (FR, Riverview H.S.) and Dave Tintera (FR, Penn Trafford H.S.) each scored two goals and Sophomore Jeremey Hettler (Penn Trafford H.S.) added one in the 5-0 win.  Saturday the scoring onslaught continued as Juniors Bill McIntosh (South Park H.S.) and Brandon Migitsch (Penn Trafford H.S.) each scored two goals for the Bobcats. Senior Salvatore Molitierno (Greensburg Central Catholic H.S.), Green and Tintera added one goal a piece for UPG.  Junior goalkeeper Mitch Paterline (Penn Trafford H.S.) recorded both shutouts.

Paterline was named AMCC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for his two-shutout performance.  He had 10 saves on the week and now has 3 shutouts this season.

The Bobcats host AMCC foe LaRoche on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Women’s Tennis Update
Bobcats go 1-2

The season has been a struggle for the 2-8 (2-4) Bobcats.  Last week was no different as UPG lost two matches to conference opponents to open their week. The Bobcats fell to Frostburg State, 6-1, on Tuesday, Sept. 26.  The Bobcats followed the loss to Frostburg State with another defeat, this time narrowly losing to AMCC Powerhouse Penn State-Behrend by a score of 4-3.  The Bobcats were not finished, however, as they bounced back to crush AMCC opponent LaRoche by a 7-0 tally.

Junior Kristy Scholl (Norwin H.S.) and sophomore Jessie Hilliard (Shannock Valley H.S.) were double winners during the week.  Junior Lori Johnston (Shannock Valley H.S.) was also a double winner for the Bobcats.  In addition to a win at Frostburg, Johnston swept number-one singles and doubles against LaRoche. Johnston was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

The Bobcats host Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday, Oct. 3 before traveling to AMCC foe Penn State-Behrend for a rematch on Friday, Oct. 5.

Volleyball Update
Bobcats Go 0-3 Despite Solid Performance By Carr

Despite a 0-3 week, the Bobcats did have at least one standout performer in sophomore in sophomore middle hitter Angelica Carr (Dubois H.S.).  In two AMCC contests, Carr tallied 15 kills and nine blocks.  Carr was honorable mention for AMCC Volleyball Athlete of the Week.

The Bobcats opened the week on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with a 3-0 loss to Mt. Aloysius. The game was a make-up for the postponed Sept. 11 contest between the two squads.  The Bobcats looked very flat in the match and were disappointed not only with the outcome but the effort.

The next day, the Bobcats traveled to Penn State-Altoona for an AMCC match-up.  While the result was the same the Bobcats seemed to be a different team playing with much more intensity on the road.  However, UPG fell 3-0 despite nine kills and four blocks from Carr.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Bobcats returned home but fell to AMCC frontrunner Pitt-Bradford by another 3-0 match. Carr nearly duplicated her previous performance by recording six kills and five blocks.  She helped to lead a spirited attach in which UPG was outmatched by the veteran UPB team.

The Bobcats, 0-3 in AMCC play with a 4-8 record overall, travel to Frostburg, Md. To face AMCC opponent Frostburg State on Tuesday, Oct. 2.  The Bobcats close their week with a trip to Lake Erie College (Painesville, Ohio) on Saturday, Oct. 6.
