The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women’s soccer team took a huge step forward on Friday, Sept. 7 when it ran to 9-0 win at D’Youville College (Buffalo, NY). The win is the first in program history for the Bobcats.
Freshman Melissa Wiggins (Beaver H.S.) led the Bobcats by scoring five goals. Freshman Nichole Whiteley (Corry H.S.) added two goals and sophomore co-captain Katie O’Brien (McGuffy H.S.) and freshman Jessica Mancino (Keystone Oaks) each added one goal for the Bobcats.
The win was sandwiched between two other matches in which the Bobcats played well but came up short. On Tuesday, September 4th the bobcats traveled to Thiel College (Greenville, Pa.), where they lost 7-2. Wiggins scored both goals in the loss. The Bobcats then ended the week on Saturday, Sept. 8 with a 2-0 at Hilbert College (Hamburg, NY.). Playing only 10 players due to injury the Bobcats were tied 0-0 at halftime but ran out of gas in the second half.
Wiggins was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for her performance. She scored 7 goals in 3 games and helped UPG to the first victory in Women’s Soccer.
The Bobcats, now 1-3 overall, host Waynesburg on Monday and travel to Bethany, W.Va. on Thursday. The women will look to gain some momentum in these nonconference games as they head into AMCC play.
The Bobcats were in action twice last week with nonconference games at Thiel (Greenville, PA) and Westminster College (New Wilmington, Pa.). Against Thiel on Wednesday, Sept. 5 the Bobcat’s tough defense held Thiel scoreless, paving the way for a 3-0 UPG win. Sophomore Mike Tintera (Penn Trafford H.S.) scored one goal and had one assist for the Bobcats. Tintera was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week.
Following the victory over Thiel, the Bobcats traveled to Westminster College on Saturday Sept. 8. The Bobcats hoped for a repeat performance of their game at Thiel but lost 5-0 to Westminster.
The Bobcats are now 1-2 overall host Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday, Sept. 11 before closing out their week with a conference game at Frostburg State (Frostburg, Md.)
The Bobcats competed twice last week, both times at the Greensburg Raquet Club. On Thursday, Sept. 6 the Bobcats hosted Bethany. The Bobcats lone win came in doubles competition where the team of junior Lori Johnston (Shannock Valley H.S.) and freshman Andrea Cuda (Greater Latrobe H.S.) earned a 9-8 victory.
The Bobcats second match came against AMCC rival Frostburg State on Saturday, Sept. 8. Junior Heather Cox (Allderdice H.S.) won her singles match and teamed with sophomore Jessie Hilliard (Shannock Valley H.S.) for a win in doubles competition. The Bobcats, however, lost the match 7-2. The loss puts the Bobcats at 0-3 overall. Cox was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
The Bobcats host AMCC foe Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday Sept. 11 and LaRoche on Saturday, Sept. 15.
The Bobcats opened their week with a dramatic 3-2 home victory over Chatham. UPG trailed 2-0 at the end of the second game and 26-14 in the third game when the Bobcats seemed to come alive. Winning 14 straight service points UPG took a 28-26 lead but then Chatham won the point (NCAA Volleyball uses rally scoring this season). However, UPG was able to win the next two points and a 30-27 victory. After cruising in the 4th game UPG stumbled a little in the fifth and decieding game but won 15-12. The Bobcats next match came at Point Park College (Pittsburgh, Pa.), where the Bobcats earned another come from behind 3-2 victory. Again UPG dropped the first two games before storming back to win the last three.
Finally, the Bobcats ended their week at the D’Youville (Buffalo, N.Y.) Invitational. In their opening match, the Bobcats soundly defeated Bay Path 3-0 and served 35 aces in a second round victory over Lake Erie. Freshman Jenna Murtha (Geibel Catholic H.S.) led the Bobcats with seven aces. All 13 Bobcats saw action in the 3-0 victory.
The Bobcat’s solid play carried them into the final versus D’Youville College but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats lost 3-0. Sophomore Lee Anne Snow (Kittaning H.S.) and freshman Melanie Sparinga (Frazier H.S.) both made the All-Tournament team as UPG took second place in the tournament.
The 4-2 Bobcats host Mt. Aloysius on Tuesday, Sept. 11 and travel to Waynesburg (Waynesburg, Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats kicked off their second season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at home against Carnegie Melon University with a 8-0 loss.
The Bobcats roster consists of ten freshmen and seven upperclassmen, including five returning players. Senior Lauri Altman (Greensburg-Salem H.S.) served as co-captain for last year’s squad while sophomore Katie O’Brien (McGuffy H.S.) led the Bobcats with three goals.
The Bobcats will try this week to get their first win. They travel to Thiel on Tuesday, Sept. 4 before making weekend trip to Buffalo, NY to face D’Youville, and Hilbert on Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8, respectively.
