The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats’ inaugural men’s tennis regular season came to a close on Thursday, April 19 with a 9-0 loss at Westminster. The loss gave the Bobcats a 2-7 record overall and 2-5 in AMCC play.
After their final regular season contest, the Bobcats traveled to Penn State-Behrend for the AMCC tournament. Sophomore Chris Knauff (Mars H.S.), freshman George Klein (Hempfield Area H.S.), fresaman Jon Germock (Yough H.S.), freshman Puneet Mehrota (Hempfield Area H.S.), and junior Brian McNamara (Uniontown H.S.), all advanced past the first round for the Bobcats. But unfortunately for UPG, all five players were defeated in their second-round contests.
In doubles competition, the teams of Germock/McNamara, Klein/Mehrota, all made it to the second round before being knocked out of the competition.
For the season, Klein led the Bobcats with a 4-7 record in singles competition. Germock (3-8), Mehrota (2-8), McNamara (1-8), junior Tom Janicki (Quaker Valley H.S.), and freshman Zbignew Broniszewski (Connellsville H.S.) also had wins for the Bobcats. Senior Ken Saksa (Uniontown H.S.) went 2-3 while freshman Knauff went 3-4 to round out the Bobcats’ list of individual victories.
In doubles competition, the team of Germock/McNamara went 3-6 to pace the Bobcats. The teams of Janicki/Mehrota (1-2), Klein/Knauff (2-3), Klein/Mehrota (1-3), and Broniszewski (1-0) also picked up wins during the season.
During the season, the Bobcats experienced the struggles expected of a first-year program. But with nine returning players combined with good coaching and a positive attitude, the Bobcats should begin to be a program to be reckoned with in 2002.
