Baseball Update
Bobcats Split Four Games

The bats finally came alive for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.  This past week UPG scored 33 runs in just four games and senior 1B Jason Morgan (Derry Area H.S.) stood out in the crowd with six hits, two homeruns and seven RBI.  Morgan batted .400 for the week and drew one walk. In addition to his exploits at the plate, Morgan pitched three innings of relief, striking out three batters while giving up only two hits. For his efforts, Morgan was honorable mention for Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Athlete of the Week. Morgan’s performance helped UPG to a 2-2 record.  Overall, the Bobcats are now 4-17 overall and 3-7 in AMCC play.

The Bobcats began their week on Friday, April 13 at AMCC foe La Roche (Pittsburgh, Pa.).  In game one, the Bobcats got 12 hits, including a homerun from Morgan, and won easily, 6-0.  On the mound, sophomore B.J. Hebenthal (Blairsville, H.S.) earned the win with a complete-game, six hit performance.  Hebenthal collected three strikeouts and only allowed one walk in the win.

In game two, the Bobcats outscored La Roche 16-12 to sweep the doubleheader.  Three Bobcats, including Morgan, had homeruns for the Bobcats.  On the mound, the Bobcats struggled and went through four pitchers.

Following the wins at La Roche, the Bobcats returned home to face AMCC foe Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, April 14. In game one, the Bobcats managed only five hits as a team and lost 5-1.  Junior shortstop Ted Ola (Pittsburgh Central Catholic H.S.) scored the Bobcats’ lone run.  Freshman Ryan Venezie (Ellwood City H.S.) pitched a complete game for UPG.  He struck out four and gave up four earned runs on 11 hits.

The Bobcats have two games remaining on the schedule.  They will host Bethany on Wednesday, April 18 and then host LaRoche on April 28th.  UPG did not qualify for the AMCC Tournament.


Softball Update
Bobcats Go 3-3

The Bobcats were in action six times last week and went 3-3.  All the games were against AMCC opponents.  During the week, the Bobcats were led by freshman 2B Kristy Scholl (North Huntingdon H.S.) who batted .538, scored three runs, had one double, eight RBI, drew two walks and stole five bases.  Scholl was honorable mention for AMCC Softball Athlete of the Week.

The Bobcats’ week began on Tuesday, April 10 at home against Penn State-Behrend.  In game one of the double-header, the Bobcats got just three hits and lost 6-1.  Scholl, sophomore Pitcher Kristin Schotting (Bethel Park H.S.), and freshman OF Melissa Sulinski (Greensburg H.S.) each went 1-3 from the plate for the Bobcats.  Scholl drove Schotting in for the Bobcats’ lone run of the game.  Freshman P Beth Tucci (Greensburg Salem H.S.) pitched a complete game but took the loss on the mound.  Tucci allowed three earned runs on nine hits.  In the field, the Bobcats were hurt by three errors.

In game two, the Bobcats rallied and pounded out seven runs on nine hits.  Scholl led the way with 2-3, four RBI appearance at the plate.  Tucci and freshman OF Jennifer Horton (Hempfield Area H.S.) also had two hits each for UPG.

Schotting pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits for the Bobcats.  Schotting also recorded 2 Ks and walked seven batters.  Tucci got the win after pitching 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball in relief of Schotting.

After splitting with PSU-Behrend, the Bobcats hosted PSU-Altoona on Thursday, April 12.  Despite 11 hits as a team, the Bobcats came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard, 9-4.  Schotting was 2-4 with two RBI for the Bobcats while Scholl went 2-3 with one RBI.  Freshman C Holly Botti (Penn Trafford H.S.) also had an RBI for UPG.

Once again, Tucci took the loss.  Tucci pitched a complete game, giving up five earned runs on 13 hits.  Despite the loss, Tucci’s performance on the mound did have some highlights as Tucci struck out six and walked only one batter.

In game two, the Bobcats’ offense went stagnant and managed only one hit in a 7-0 loss.  Schotting took the loss for UPG after pitching  5 2/3 innings and giving up three earned runs for the Bobcats.  Schotting walked four batters and struck out five.  In relief, Tucci pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits.

The Bobcats’ week ended on a highnote as they took both games in a double-header at Lake Erie (Painesville, Ohio) on Saturday, April 14.

In the first game, the Bobcats got two RBI a piece from Scholl and Botti to cruise to a 10-2 win.  The game was stopped after just five innings.  Tucci pitched a complete game and struck out five batters to claim the win.  Tucci allowed no earned runs and no walks in the victory.

In game two, the Bobcats’ offense put on another strong performance as UPG nine Bobcats had hits in a 12-5 romp.  The Bobcats also had eight stolen bases as a team.  Schotting pitched four innings, allowing seven walks while collecting four Ks.  In relief, Tucci pitched three innings, allowing just one run while striking out four batters.

With the three wins this week, the Bobcats are now 4-6 in AMCC play and 7-11 overall.  The Bobcats travel to Pitt-Bradford on Monday, April 16 for an AMCC showdown and will begin play in the AMCC playoffs on the April 18th at Frostburg in the 1st Round.  


Men’s Tennis Update
Bobcats Have Match Suspended, Go 0-1

After the Bobcats’ Tuesday, April 10 match at Waynesburg College (Waynesburg, Pa.), was suspended due to rain, the Bobcats traveled to PSU-Altoona on Thursday April 12 but were shut out by their AMCC foes, 9-0.

The Bobcats travel to Westminster on Tuesday April 17 and will compete in the AMCC tournament on Saturday, April 21.
