The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg softball squad ended their season with losses to Chatham, 11-1 and 11-10 on Tuesday.
In game one, just two Bobcats got hits as sophomore Ashlie Burkholder (Cocalico H.S.) went 1-2 and drove in freshman Jen Sutlic for the Bobcats’ lone run. Freshman Melissa Wiggins (Beaver H.S.) took the loss on the mound for UPG.
In game two, the Bobcats’ stagnant offense became a juggernaut as Burkholder and sophomore Angelica Carr (Dubois H.S.) had multiple hits while four other Bobcats each had one hit. Burkholder and Sutlic scored two runs each in the loss. Wiggins once again took the loss, pitching 4 2/3 innings while giving up 12 hits.
UPG finished the season 0-16-1 overall and 0-9 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The Bobcats had a tough week, going 0-9, including two doubleheaders to AMCC teams. The losses drop to 4-17 overall and 3-9 in the AMCC.
UPG began the week at Penn State-Behrend on Monday, where the Bobcats dropped a doubleheader, 18-0 and 15-2.
Following the AMCC loss to PSU-Behrend, the Bobcats traveled to Penn State-Altoona on Thursday, losing 8-7 and 11-5.
In game one, junior Ryan Venezie (Lincoln H.S.) went 3-4 with two RBIs. Venezie also scored three times. Junior Sean Kilpatrick (Greensburg Salem H.S.) drove in two runs for UPG, while senior Doug Gallick (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) crossed home plate twice for the Bobcats. Juniors Mike Matras (Frazier H.S.) and Al Klimowski (Lower Burrel H.S.) also added runs for UPG.
In game two, Venezie scored twice more for UPG while freshman Rob Shumaker (Ford City H.S.) and sophomore John Parknavy (McKeesport H.S.) also scored. Gallick scored two runs and was the only Bobcat to have multiple hits for UPG, going 2-4.
On Friday, the Bobcats hosted Pitt-Bradford. After a 15-1 loss in the first game, the Bobcats offense made a small recovery in a 9-6 loss. Venezie added to his run total with two scores.
The Bobcats stayed home for a double-header against Frostburg State on Saturday, and were outscored 31-14 in the doubleheader. In a 27-11 game-one loss, sophomore Kirk Loos (Ringgold H.S.) led the UPG charge, going 4-5 including a double and a grand slam. Loos finished the game with two runs and 4 RBIs. Parknavy and freshman Steve D’Uva (Pittsburgh Central Catholic H.S.) were the only other Bobcats to score multiple times, each crossing home twice.
In game two, Matras and Shumaker each went 2-2 from the plate with Shumaker also driving in two runs and scoring once. Loos added an RBI for UPG.
The Bobcats’ lone non-conference game last week was a 10-0 Sunday loss to Waynesburg. Freshman Andy Rosebosky (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) had the Bobcats only hit in the loss.
Loos was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Baseball Athlete of the Week. Loos batted .349 with four hits, six RBIs, and three runs scored.
UPG is 4-17 overall and 3-9 in the
AMCC.
The Bobcats began the week on Monday with an 8-1 loss to AMCC foe PSU-Altoona. Senior Tom Janicki (Quaker Valley H.S.) was the Bobcats’ lone winner. Janicki was victorious in #6 singles, 7-5 and 6-4.
The Bobcats dropped a 9-0 match to
PSU-Behrend on Friday and 9-0 to non-conference opponent Westminster on
Saturday.
