In the four games, Sophomore P/2B Ryan Venezie (Lincoln High) batted .308, scoring three runs while driving in four more. Venezie also smashed two homeruns. On the mound, Venezie pitched a complete game five hitter against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Penn State-Behrend. Venezie was honorable mention for AMCC Baseball Athlete of the Week.
The Bobcats opened their week on Tuesday, April 3 at Frostburg State (Frostburg, Md.). UPG managed only one hit in the first game of the double-header and suffered a 14-0 defeat at the hands of Frostburg. Senior right-hander Kevin Laskey (MT. Pleasant H.S.) took the loss for the Bobcats. Laskey pitched four innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits and struck out three batters. In relief, freshman rightie Steve Royer (Downingtown H.S.) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs.
In the second game, the Bobcats managed to score nine runs but allowed 15, partially attributed to five errors in the field. At the plate, the Bobcats managed eight hits including homeruns by Venezie and junior Shortstop Ted Ola (Pittsburgh Central Catholic H.S.). Ola was 2-5, with the Home Run and a double. Ola led the Bobcats with four RBI while Venezie ripped 3 RBIs.
Morgan went 2-3 for the Bobcats and scored two runs while sophomore 3rd Baseman Chris Kovalyak (Steel Valley H.S.) went 2-4 with a double. Sophomore B.J. Hebenthal took the loss for UPG after allowing 12 runs in 4 2/3 innings.
After licking their wounds from the two losses to Frostburg, the Bobcats returned home and defeated PSU-Behrend 8-3 in game one of a double-header. It was the first time in the history of the baseball team that they defeated Penn State Behrend.
Morgan and Venezie had homeruns for the Bobcats while Gajdos was 3-4. freshman Center fielder Kirk Loos was 3-3 for UPG and scored three runs. Venezie pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven batters.
In game two, the Bobcats fortunes took a bad turn. The Bobcats managed only two hits and lost 9-1. Venezie and Ola both went 1-3 for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats, are 2-15 overall with a 0-2 record in AMCC play, travel to AMCC foe LaRoche (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on Wednesday, April 11 and then return home to face AMCC rival Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, April 14.
The Bobcats had a busy week in AMCC play, competing in six games, all against AMCC opponents. But unfortunately for UPG, the Bobcats won only two of the six games.
Sophomore P/OF Kristin Schotting (Bethel Park H.S.) batted .467 and scored four runs. Schotting also added one homerun, one double and one triple. In addition to her exploits at the plate, Schotting was also outstanding on the mound, pitching 18 innings while allowing only four runs and striking out 15 batters.
The Bobcats opened their week at home on Tuesday, April 3 in a non-conference match-up against AMCC foe Penn State-Altoona. Schotting led the Bobcats, who ripped five hits as a team, by going 2-2 from the plate. The Bobcats, though, couldn’t muster enough offense for a victory and suffered an 8-0 defeat.
Freshman Beth Tucci (Greensburg Salem H.S.) pitched a complete game for the Bobcats and allowed nine hits and 0 walks while striking out four batters.
In game two, the Bobcats pounded out 13 hits and scored nine runs for a 9-5 triumph. Schotting and freshman Ashlie Burkholder (Cocalico H.S.) each cored two runs for the Bobcats. On the hill, Schotting pitched six innings, giving up five runs on five hits. Schotting also walked five batters and struck out four.
After splitting two games with Altoona, the Bobcats hosted Frostburg State on Thursday, April 5 and came away with a 4-2 victory in the first game of the double-header. Tucci pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out four. During her solid performance, Tucci did not allowed a walk.
In game two, the Bobcats pounded five hits but could squeeze out only one run and lost 4-1. Schotting struggled some with her control allowing six walks in a complete game performance. Schotting only gave up four hits in all, though, and struck out five Frostburg batters.
The Bobcats wrapped up their week on Sunday, April 8 at AMCC opponent LaRoche. Despite a 2-3, two-run performance from Schotting and six hits as a team, the Bobcats lost a 4-3 heartbreaker in game one of a doubleheader. Tucci pitched a complete game and allowed four earned runs. Tucci gave up 10 hits while striking out 4 batters.
In game two, the Bobcats got two hits from freshman Holly Botti (Penn Trafford H.S.) but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats lost 5-2. On the mound, Schotting pitched a complete game, allowing five unearned runs while striking out six batters and walking four. In the field, the Bobcats had five costly errors.
The Bobcats are 2-4 in AMCC play and 4-8 overall. UPG will host AMCC opponents Penn State-Behrend and PSU-Altoona on April 10 and 11, respectively. The Bobcats then take to the road to face Chatham on Thursday, April 12, and AMCC foe Lake Erie on Saturday, April 14.
The first-year Men’s Tennis program continues to have its struggles early on and last week was no exception. The Bobcats faced AMCC foes Frostburg State and Penn State-Behrend, respectively.
On Monday, April 2, the Bobcats traveled to Frostburg State but were swept 9-0.
Following the loss at Frostburg, the Bobcats faced PSU-Behrend. Freshmen George Klein (Hempfield Area H.S.) and Jon Germock (Yough H.S.) each had wins in singles competition for UPG. In doubles competition, the Bobcats were swept 3-0 to give Behrend a 7-2 victory.
The Bobcats, 2-7 in AMCC play and 2-5 overall, travel to Waynesburg (Waynesburg, Pa.) on Tuesday, April 10, and to Penn State-Altoona on Thursday, April 12.
