Baseball Update
Team goes 4-4 for week

A busy week for the Bobcats culminated with a split at Allegheny-Mountain-Collegiate- Conference foe LaRoche on Saturday.  The Bobcats lost game one of the doubleheader, 7-2, but bounced back for a 5-4 game-two victory.

The split over the Redhawks ended a week where the Bobcats recorded two victories by outscored AMCC foe Lake Erie 26-12 on Thursday.  Wednesday against Thiel, the Bobcats posted nine runs in a doubleheader but it wasn’t enough as they suffered losses of 12-2 and 8-7.  UPG began the week on Monday with a spilt against AMCC rival Penn State-Altoona.  After dropping an 8-4 loss in game one, the Bobcats touched home eight times in an 8-6 game-two win.

Senior Pitcher/Third Baseman Doug Gallick (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Baseball Athlete of the Week.  Gallick pitched two complete games for the Bobcats, winning both (vs. PSU-Altoona and LaRoche, respectively).  He also went .294 from the plate with a triple and a double while collecting four RBIs.  Gallick also performed on the base paths, scoring four runs and stealing a base.

UPG is now 4-8 overall with a 3-1 record in conference play.  They host Frostburg on Saturday in an AMCC matchup before traveling to Waynesburg on Sunday.  Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Softball Update
Still looking for first win

Freshman Outfielder Jen Sutlic (Penn-Trafford H.S.)  had a fantastic week for the Bobcats, batting .320 with two doubles and a triple and driving in three runs.  Sutlic also drew a walk and recorded a stolen base for UPG and was honorable mention for AMCC Softball Athlete of the Week.

Sutlic’s strong efforts, though, were not enough to pull the Bobcats out of the doldrums they have experienced all season long.  The Bobcats began their week on Monday by dropping a double-header at Penn State-Altoona by scores of 10-2 and 13-1.

The next day, the Bobcats dropped two to Pitt-Bradford, 15-0 and 12-4.  At AMCC foe Frostburg State on Thursday, the Bobcats dropped the first contest 10-2 but came back from an 8-4 sixth-inning-deficit for a 10-10 tie in game two.  The game was called due to darkness.

Two days later, the Bobcats gave up 38 runs in two games to a powerful LaRoche squad that held the Bobcats to just one run.  UPG finally ended the week on Sunday with home losses to Waynesburg, 10-0 and 9-6.

The Bobcats are now 0-14-1 overall with a 0-9 record in AMCC play.  They end the regular season on Saturday with a home stand against the AMCC’s Lake Erie.

Men’s Tennis Update
Team gears up for final week

The Men’s Tennis squad fell to 1-7 with losses to Waynesburg (8-1) and Frostburg State 9-0), respectively.

Against Waynesburg on Wednesday, sophomore Puneet Mehrota (Hempfield Area H.S.) pushed his opponent to three sets in #4 singles before falling 0-6, 6-4, 1-10.

In doubles competition, the freshmen duo of Mike Heise (Canon McMillan H.S.) and Ryan Manzer (Mars H.S.) won their match, 8-6, for UPG’s lone victory of the afternoon.

The Bobcats stumbled against Frostburg on Thursday, though freshman Kris Richardson played tough at #6 singles before losing 3-6 and 5-7.

The Bobcats have six matches left on their schedule including AMCC matches against Penn State Altoona on Wednesday and a make-up match with PSA on Monday the 15th.  UPG will host Penn State Behrend and Lake Erie College on the 12th and 13th respectively.  The Bobcats will travel to Washington & Jefferson (Washington, Pa.) on Tuesday the 16th for the final regular season match.
