Baseball Update
Bobcats Drop Four
 
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg baseball squad opened the week two losses against Waynesburg College on Tuesday, March 27 at UPG and ended the week with two losses on the road.

In game one of the double-header, on March 27th, the Bobcats lost 8-3 despite getting 10 hits as a team.  Senior First Baseman Tim Grum (Springdale H.S.), junior Centerfielder Ted Ola (Pittsburgh Central Catholic H.S.), and freshman Outfielder Kirk Loos (Ringgold H.S.) had two hits each for the Bobcats.  Grum, Loos, and senior Jason Morgan all had RBIs for UPG.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander B.J. Hebenthal (Blairsville H.S.) pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run.  In all, Hebenthal gave up two runs and two hits while striking out three.  He also walked two batters.   Freshman Jon Campbell (Hempfield Area H.S.)  took the loss, in relief giving up five earned runs.

In game two, the Bobcats managed just four hits and suffered a 10-4 defeat.  Grum provided the highlight for UPG, crushing a two-run homerun.  Sophomore Ryan Venezie (Lincoln H.S.) added an RBI.

Right-hander Morgan pitched three strong innings for the Bobcats, giving up one unearned run while striking out four.  Freshman Steve Royer (Downingtown H.S.) took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing four earned runs.  Freshman Jason Ramaley (Franklin Regional H.S.) finished the game and allowed three runs in two innings.
 
On Saturday, March 31, The Bobcats traveled to Pitt-Bradford for the first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match-up.  The Bobcats lost the two games by a combined score of 15-2.  Senior Leftfielder Brian Gajdos (Gateway H.S.) had a double and an RBI for the Bobcats.

Right-hander Venezie pitched a complete game (six innings) for the Bobcats, allowing only two earned runs and four runs in all.  Venezie recorded four K’s and walked just one batter.  In the field, Morgan recorded five putouts while freshman Catcher Jon Campbell recorded three putouts and three assists.  Venezie’s effort earned him honorable mention for AMCC Baseball Athlete of the Week.

In game two of the double-header, the Bobcats had just five hits and were unable to score.  Royer took the loss for UPG after pitching three innings and giving up five earned runs.  Sophomore rightie Chris Kovalyak also pitched three innings for the Bobcats, allowing three runs.  Royer and Kovalyak each recorded two K’s.  Campbell again led the Bobcats in the field and had five putouts in the loss.

UPG is now 0-2 in AMCC play and 1-12 overall.  The Bobcats host AMCC foes Penn State-Altoona and Frostburg State on April 3 and April 5, respectively.  The Bobcats return home on Saturday, April 7 to host AMCC rival Penn State-Behrend.  


Softball Update
Bobcats Lose Two

The Bobcats traveled to Bethany College (Bethany, WV) on March 29th.  The Bobcats lost both games by a combined score of 20-2.

In the two games, sophomore Kristin Schotting (Bethel Park H.S.) was the offensive bright spot as she went 4-5 with a homerun and two RBI.

On the mound, Schotting pitched one complete game, giving up eight hits and three earned runs. In all, Schotting allowed 10 runs and eight walks.  Schotting also recorded 2 strikeouts.  Schotting was honorable mention for AMCC Softball Athlete of the Week. Freshman Beth Tucci (Greensburg Salem H.S.) took the loss in the second game, allowing eight earned runs (10 in all) and 14 hits in a complete game.  In the field, junior Ashley Brown (Salisbury Elks H.S.) had nine putouts to lead the Bobcats.

The Bobcats were scheduled to play AMCC foe Penn State-Behrend on Saturday, March 31 but the game was postponed.

The Bobcats, 2-4 overall with a 0-0 record in AMCC play, host AMCC opponent Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday, April 3.  The Bobcats continue their home stand against Frostburg State on Thursday, April 5 before traveling to La Roche on April 7.


Men’s Tennis Update
Bobcats Pick Up Second Victory

The Bobcats opened their week at home against AMCC frontrunner Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday, March 27.

The Bobcats dropped the match 9-0.  In singles competition, junior Brian McNamara (Freedom H.S.)  kept his #4 singles match close but ultimately lost 6-4 and 8-6.

In #3 doubles, the team of junior Tom Janicki (Quaker Valley H.S.) and freshman Zbignew Broniszewski dropped their match 8-6.

Following the loss to PSU-Altoona, the Bobcats traveled to Lake Erie College.  At Lake Erie, the Bobcats completed a 9-0 sweep.  McNamara and sophomore Chris Knauff (Mars H.S.) each earned victories.  Broniszewski and fellow freshmen Jon Germock (Yough H.S.), George Klein (Hempfield Area H.S.), and Puneet Mehrota (Hempfield Area H.S.) also picked up singles wins for UPG.

In doubles competition, it was more of the same as the team of Knauff-Klein took #1 doubles 8-5.  Germock and McNamara took #2 doubles 8-3 with Mehrota-Broniszewski completing the sweep by winning #3 doubles 8-1.

Klein was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

The Bobcats are 2-3 in AMCC play and 2-5 overall.  The Bobcats travel to Frostburg State (Frostburg, Md.) on April 2 and to Thiel College (Greenville, Pa.) on Saturday, April 7.
