The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Women’s Basketball team suffered a 73-64 loss to defending conference champ Penn State-Altoona in the championship game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament on Feb. 23.
The Bobcats got to the title game by steamrolling Lake Erie, 79-55, at home on Feb. 20 then running past Penn State-Behrend, 75-67, at PSU-Altoona on Feb. 22.
Against PSU-Altoona, sophomore guard Ann Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) matched her career high and scored a team-high 27 points. She also grabbed five rebounds before fouling out in the closing moments. Freshman forward Amy Ploskunak (Plum H.S.) scored 13 points and collected four caroms for UPG. Freshman guard Abbey Cunningham (Brooke Point H.S.) and junior forward Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.) each grabbed nine rebounds to lead UPG in that category.
Sophomore guard Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) played a brilliant floor game by dishing a game-high nine assists while only turning the ball over once.
Prior to the championship game, the Bobcats knocked off PSU-Behrend behind 27 points, six assists, four boards, and four steals from Sral. Arnold had a solid effort with 17 points, a team-high six rebounds, and a game-high four blocked shots. Freshman forward Becky Joyce (Carrick H.S.) added 10 points for the Bobcats.
In the opening round of the tournament, every Bobcat saw significant minutes as Cunningham scored a game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds. Ploskunak and sophomore guard Jordan Fox (Hempfield Area H.S.) were the only other two Bobcats in double figures with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Joyce and freshman forward Bethany Sersen (Norwin H.S.) each grabbed seven rebounds in the contest.
Several Bobcats earned postseason awards for their efforts throughout the year. Head Coach Carol Gelet was once again named AMCC Coach of the Year (she received the honor last year, her first as UPG’s head coach) while Arnold and Sral made the All-Conference First-Team. Auld was Honorable Mention for All-Conference honors.
The UPG Bobcats were quickly bounced from the AMCC tourney with a 95-69 first-round loss at home to LaRoche on Feb. 20.
Freshman forward Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) led the Bobcats with 13 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) and freshman forward Phil Grenda (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) each added 10 points for UPG.
The UPG Men’s Basketball team also had several postseason award winners. Moye was Honorable Mention for the All-Conference Team and was named AMCC Newcomer of the Year. Completing a UPG sweep for Coach of the Year honors, Karl Radday was named AMCC Coach of the Year for men’s basketball. This was Radday’s second season at UPG.
