Women’s Basketball Update
Bobcats End Regular Season; Will Host Tourney Game

With a 3-0 week that featured two conference victories, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats moved into second place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.  In a year in which they shattered the school record for assists in one season (388 as a team), the Bobcats finished 12-13 overall but with an AMCC mark of 9-3.  The Bobcats host Lake Erie College in the first round of the AMCC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.

A win against Lake Erie College will advance the Bobcats to the second round of the AMCC Tournament on Friday, Feb 22 at Penn State-Altoona where they would play the winner of the Penn State Behrend and Frostburg State game.

The Bobcats began their week on Feb. 11 with a 60-39 win at Chatham.  Sophomore guard Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) led the Bobcats with 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds, and two steals.

Sophomore guard Ann Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) also played a solid game with six points and six rebounds, and four steals while freshman forward Becky Joyce (Carrick H.S.) scored seven points and grab five rebounds.  Freshman forward Abbey Cunningham (Brooke Point H.S., Va.) scored eight points and grabbed one rebound to go with one steal.

On Feb. 13, the Bobcats played the LaRoche Redhawks even in the first half, going into the locker room deadlocked at 40. The Bobcats took over in the second half and went on to crush the Redhawks, 99-71.  The 99 points set a new UPG record and the team’s 38 field goals tied the school record.

Cunningham led all scorers with a career-high 20 points and grabbed four rebounds and dished three assists.  Freshman Forward Amy Ploskunak (Plum H.S.) scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while Auld handed out a game-high seven assists and recorded a game-high five steals to go with her 11 points.  Sral scored 16 points and handed out four assists while Joyce narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Bobcats finally closed their week on Feb. 16 at AMCC foe Penn State-Behrend.  Once again, the Bobcats went into halftime tied--this time at 27— but played a strong second half in which they converted on 50 percent of their field goals while holding PSU-Behrend to just 32 percent shooting.

Cunningham tied her career-high and the led the team with 20 points, she also grabbed two rebounds to go with one steal and one blocked shot.  Joyce continued her solid play, recording a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds while blocking one shot.  Sral scored seven points and grabbed nine boards.

For her efforts (48 points and seven rebounds), Cunningham was honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.


Men’s Basketball Update
Bobcats Finish Fourth in AMCC; Will Host Tourney Game

The Bobcats ended their season with a 1-1 week.  On the season, the Bobcats finished 8-17 overall with a 5-7 record in the AMCC which puts them in fourth place.  The Bobcats host LaRoche  in the first round of the AMCC tournament on Feb. 20th  at 8 p.m..  A victory will advance the Bobcats to the second round at Pitt-Bradford on Friday, Feb. 22.

On Feb. 13, the Bobcats overcame some early problems to bolt to a 70-65 victory.  Junior forward Garret Treese (Hempfield Area H.S.) led all scorers with 16 points while freshman forward Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Junior guard Jeff Fisher (Bethel Park H.S.) scored 10 points and dished a team-high four assists.

Before the game senior guard Clint Roche (Gateway H.S.) was honored for senior night.  Roche is the only senior on the Bobcats roster.  He is also just the second player to compete in intercollegiate basketball all four of his years at UPG.  He was a member of the 98-99 and 99-00 Teams that won back-to-back AMCC Championships.

The Bobcats ended their week with a 76-62 loss at AMCC opponent PSU-Behrend.

Moye scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds en route to being an honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.  Fisher played well again, scoring 12 points before fouling out while freshman guard Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) scored 10 points and grabbed two rebounds.

The Bobcats season will end this week.  If they can defeat LaRoche on Wednesday they will travel to Pitt-Bradford and take on the host team at 8pm Saturday.
